The Pittsburgh Steelers appeared like they finally had a well-rounded wide receiver room heading into the 2026 season. Now, just six weeks into the season, Pittsburgh's No. 1 wide receiver, DK Metcalf, has been hot and cold, and the team's wide receiver No. 2 and No. 3 in Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson, are both on Injured Reserve. The Steelers are in search of help at the position as the NFL trade deadline approaches, but the contracts of their current wide receivers combined with the somewhat thin market have made this situation murky for the team.

There have been plenty of names floated around as potential targets for Pittsburgh. It seems very likely that the team will make a substantial move to get help at wide receiver before the trade deadline, which is just under three weeks away.

While the Steelers could choose to roll with the talent that is currently on the roster in Metcalf and rookie breakout wide receiver Germie Bernard, an injury to either of these players could be devastating to the offense. Bernard is in the middle of a breakout just six weeks into his NFL career, putting up back-to-back monster performances in Weeks 5 and 6. Pittsburgh also employs a very talented tight end duo in Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. This group appears talented enough to fill the void left by Pittman Jr. and Wilson, but again, the team is one injury away from being sent into a full-on panic.

What makes the situation even more difficult is the expensive contracts that Metcalf and Pittman Jr. carry. It will be hard for the team to acquire and pay a talented wide receiver while a large portion of the money on offense is already going to the wide receiver duo.

During a recent episode of Kaboly + Mack Live, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly spoke about the potential wide receiver targets for Pittsburgh and how the players already on the roster make these targets more difficult to acquire.

"The money lines up with guys like Jauan Jennings, Kayshon Boutte, and Jalen Tolbert," Kaboly said. "Those are the type of guys that you look at. Even Brian Thomas Jr., as he is very young and still talented. He is not that expensive either. Already having a guy making almost $30 million and another making over $20 million a year complicates things though. You have to look forward into this season. They do need someone that is more than just a placeholder until Wilson and Pittman Jr. come back."

Whatever direction the Steelers decide to go in, it can only help the offense. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been on a hot streak, which has helped the offense to put up at least 26 points in four straight games. The passing game has looked more efficient than any Steelers fans have seen in multiple seasons. Sure, another talented wide receiver would make life easier for Pittsburgh, but the current offense has been more than capable of having explosive performances.

The Steelers finally seem like they have figured it out, riding a two-game win streak going into an overseas matchup with the underperforming New Orleans Saints. Pittsburgh's incoming schedule now appears softer than initially believed, so it is possible that the team will continue to roll with the personnel that it has until either Pittman Jr. or Wilson can return. Regardless, this offense looks like the real deal that could finally propel the Steelers to postseason success.

Steelers Reunite With A Former Wide Receiver

Pittsburgh recently signed veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the team's practice squad. Valdes-Scantling spent a few years with Rodgers during their time playing for the Green Bay Packers. In 2025, he signed with the Steelers and recorded 10 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown in five games. Yet again, he has reunited with Rodgers and the Steelers and appears to be an extra depth piece for Pittsburgh's offense while they await the potential returns of Pittman Jr. and Wilson.
