Mike Tomlin may have stepped away from the Pittsburgh Steelers, but his coaching career could be far from over. After spending 19 seasons leading Pittsburgh, Tomlin, who is still just 54 years of age, has moved into broadcasting with NBC, where he has quickly established himself as a prominent voice on Football Night in America. However, according to a new report from Mark Maske of Front Office Sports, NFL teams could soon make a serious push to bring him back to the sidelines.

Tomlin's track record explains why he would attract so much attention. He never recorded a losing season as the Steelers' head coach, led the franchise to 13 playoff appearances, and won Super Bowl XLIII during his second season in Pittsburgh. Even with growing frustration over the team's postseason struggles in his final years, his rรฉsumรฉ would make him an appealing candidate for organizations searching for an established leader.
Maske's report suggests Tomlin could be the most sought-after name available when teams begin evaluating their coaching situations after the season. One high-ranking NFL official made that possibility clear when discussing Tomlin's potential return.
"He will clearly be at the top of the list for any team that has an opening," the official told Front Office Sports. "If he's willing to come back, that could cause a team or two to create an opening. It's a call that you have to make if you're looking for a coach."
That is a significant statement because it suggests Tomlin could influence the coaching market even before he publicly commits to returning. A team that might otherwise retain its current coach could reconsider its plans if it believes Tomlin is willing to listen to an offer.
Still, there is an important distinction between being a desirable candidate and actually wanting the job. Tomlin has already transitioned into a broadcasting career, and returning to coaching would mean taking on the demanding schedule, scrutiny, and expectations that come with leading an NFL franchise.
Maske reported that Tomlin's NBC contract is believed to allow him to return to coaching. The financial terms of that agreement have not been made public, and it remains unclear whether Tomlin would be willing to leave a promising broadcasting role for another opportunity on the sidelines.
Money could be part of the discussion, but the decision would also involve his lifestyle and appetite for the demands of coaching again. For Pittsburgh, however, Tomlin's future could have implications beyond his personal career decision.
Steelers Could Demand Significant Compensation if Tomlin Returns
One of the most intriguing parts of Tomlin's potential comeback is the possibility that the Steelers could still hold his contractual rights. Pittsburgh announced a three-year extension in June 2024 that ran through the 2027 season, reportedly with a team option for 2027. Front Office Sports noted that it remains unclear whether the option was exercised, meaning the Steelers' ability to seek compensation would depend on the details of his contract.
If Pittsburgh still controls those rights, another team might have to negotiate with the Steelers before hiring Tomlin. That could give the franchise an opportunity to secure draft compensation rather than simply watching its former head coach join a rival organization for nothing.
There is a recent example of how such a situation can play out. When the Denver Broncos hired Sean Payton in 2023, they sent the New Orleans Saints first- and second-round draft picks and received a third-round selection in return. Payton had stepped away from coaching and worked in broadcasting before coming back, making his situation a useful comparison to Tomlin's current circumstance.

That does not mean Pittsburgh would automatically receive the same package. Any compensation would depend on Tomlin's contractual status and negotiations between the teams involved. Still, a coach with his experience and rรฉsumรฉ could create considerable interest, potentially giving the Steelers leverage if another franchise wants to bring him aboard.
There is also a timing factor. If Tomlin remains away from coaching through another season, the contractual situation could change, depending on the terms of his agreement with Pittsburgh.
The Steelers would need to understand exactly what rights they retain before anyone could determine what a potential coaching trade might look like. Tomlin's next move remains uncertain, and the Steelers have already moved forward with Mike McCarthy as their head coach. Nevertheless, the possibility of Tomlin returning to the NFL is a storyline worth watching as the offseason approaches.
If he decides he wants another chance to coach, interested teams may have to compete for his services, and potentially negotiate with Pittsburgh to make it happen. The Steelers might no longer have Tomlin on their sideline, but they could still have a stake in where his coaching career goes next.
