Another CBS Sports Ranking, Another Steelers Snub

We all remember back in May when CBS Sports released a Top 100 Players and their analyst Pete Prisco completely ignored the Pro Bowl play of Pittsburgh Steelers FS, Minkah Fitzpatrick. SteelerNation was blown away that an NFL Analyst could leave one of the top safeties in the game off of a list of Top 100 players.

Well yinzers, CBS has done it again! This time the list was for the top 10 NFL Head Coaches for 2020. HC Mike Tomlin was placed on the list created by CBS’ Sean Wagner.

As you can see, Tomlin was put on the list, but it is where he was put on the list that is mind-boggling. There is no way that anyone could convince me or any other logical NFL fan that there are 6 head coaches in the NFL better than Mike Tomlin! I am not really sure how this ranking was made. Did the analyst take a look at careers of each head coach or just last season? Either way, Tomlin should have been higher on this list! Just take a look at last season to help put things into perspective. No coach did more with the adversity that Tomlin dealt with as a head coach last season. After future first ballot Hall of Fame QB Ben Roethlisberger went down with a season-ending injury, some Steeler fans were ready to throw in the towel. However, Tomlin led with the same next man up mentality as he always has. The Steelers offense was led by two quarterbacks that provided subpar quarterback play. Despite that, Tomlin was in the conversation for NFL Coach of the Year during several points of the season, and he actually finished tied for 4th place in that category when it was all said and done. Even though the team finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs, the fight in last season’s team said a lot about the strong leadership of HC Tomlin.

Now, let’s take a look at the career winning percentages of the head coaches.

Name Team Seasons Games Wins Losses Win %
Matt LaFleur Green Bay 2019-20 18 14 4 .778
Bill Belichick New England 1991-95,2000-2020 443 304 139 .686
Sean McVay Los Angeles Rams 2017-2020 52 35 17 .673
Mike Tomlin Pittsburgh Steelers 2007-2020 223 141 81 .635
Sean Payton New Orleans Saints 2006-2011, 2013- 2020 223 139 84 .623
John Harbaugh Baltimore Ravens 2008-2020 209 128 81 .612

I decided to only include the 6 highest winning percentages. Mike Tomlin is ranked 4th on this list, but that’s simply because Sean McVay has only coached in 52 career games and Matt LaFleur has coached in 18 career games. I am not taking anything away from those two, they are both tremendous young head coaches in the league. However, consistency over a long period of time is what every team and fan base in the NFL wants out of their head coach. Tomlin has provided us with that! With coaching in 200 games or more as a stipulation, Mike Tomlin ranks second in winning percentage, only behind Bill Belichick. You could argue that Tomlin should be 2nd on CBS’ Top 10 NFL Head Coaches list based on careers. It’s ridiculous that Tomlin isn’t even top 5 on their list. It should be noted that two of the coaches ahead of Tomlin, Kyle Shanahan and Andy Reid, are not even in the top 6 in terms of winning percentage.

Where do you think Coach Mike Tomlin should be ranked on this list of Top 10 NFL Head Coaches for 2020? Sound off in the comments section below, on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram!
