Dulac: If Steelers Want A Super Bowl Then A Surprising Big Reunion At Offensive Coordinator Is A Risk To Take

The criticism for Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada only continues to get louder. At the Pittsburgh Penguins’ home opener on Tuesday evening, “Fire Canada” chants began to ring around PPG Paints Arena. That’s something that we’ve heard all season at Acrisure Stadium in the Steelers' home games thus far. Despite the fans' unpleasant feeling on Canada, he is still holding onto his position.

Steelers Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada stares into the distance during a 2022 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

It seems likely at this point that the team will hold onto Canada through the end of the 2023 season, something that Mark Kaboly of The Athletic echoed on Tuesday. If they don't move on from him during the Week 6 bye, it's realistic to think he makes it through the rest of the year. In his chat on Wednesday, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette brought up an interesting name as a replacement for Canada down the road.

"Bring back [Bruce] Arians. After all, no risk it, no biscuit."

Now, to be fair, this was in response to a reader stating that the team's offensive coordinators have gotten worse since Arians "retired." If you remember, the team moved on from him after the 2011 campaign, which was originally touted that he retired. Shortly after, he latched on with the Indianapolis Colts. Then, he had prolonged tenures with the Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a head coach.

Bruce Arians was successful as an offensive coordinator for the Steelers, but the team surprisingly moved on from him after the 2011 season.

Now, Arians has a podcast called No Risk It No Biscuit. That is a popular phrase from the former Steelers offensive coordinator, thus why Dulac used it in his answer. After leaving Pittsburgh, Arians re-established himself as one of the better offensive minds in the NFL. It's clear that the Steelers offense needs some sort of jolt after the bye week, as they continue to be one of the worst collective units in the league.

Will The Steelers Go Outside The Organization For Next OC?

Elsewhere in his chat, Dulac again mentions Jon Gruden as a potential fit for offensive coordinator this upcoming offseason. In case you missed it, Dulac mentioned the former head coach in his chat last week as well. Gruden has a close relationship with Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, as the latter views Gruden as a mentor. To be clear, these are moves that would have to wait until the offseason, as the Steelers have shown they likely won't move on from Canada in-season.

Third of all, Byron Leftwich's name was also brought up in Dulac's fan chat as well. It's reasonable to make that connection, and Dulac rebutted the recent reports that the Steelers denied to give Leftwich a chance as an offensive consultant.

Leftwich, Arians, and Gruden. The last two seem to be names just based off past connections, but at this point in their lives/careers, the Steelers probably wouldn't make much sense.

Steelers Mike Sullivan

Steelers quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan has spent three seasons in his position and could be a possible candidate to replace Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada.

Of these three options, Leftwich remains the most realistic guy to take over when Pittsburgh does eventually move on from Canada. We can't rule out in-house options of course, as we know that's how the black and gold like to do things. Glenn Thomas and Mike Sullivan are the two obvious names for that particular discussion, something that we can wait to discuss for a few months.

People have also brought up a guy like former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as a potential option, but he seems content with what he's doing in his post-football life. It's important to note that Canada's contract does end after the season, so the team can simply opt to not renew his deal rather than officially firing him. In the meantime, these are just a few interesting names to discuss.

If/when the Steelers do move on from Canada, who do you want to see replace him? Do you think the team holds onto him through the end of the season? Are fans becoming a bit too harsh on the Steelers OC? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
