The Pittsburgh Steelers have a big choice to make in the 2025 offseason at quarterback. That is most important position in all of football, and Pittsburgh has struggled in that room since Ben Roethlisberger retired. The Steelers brought in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields for the 2024 campaign.

Both Fields and Wilson got a chance to prove themselves. Both of them had highs and lows in their first seasons with Pittsburgh. Now they both are free agents, and Steelers fans are very curious as to what decision the organization will make at quarterback. ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler provided Steelers fans with new insight regarding the future of Wilson in the Steel City. A new team has entered the mix.
According to Fowler, a surprising team has emerged as a serious contender for Wilson’s services. While the Steelers have expressed slight interest in bringing Wilson back, they are not the only ones. With quarterback-needy teams looking for a veteran presence, Wilson’s experience and leadership remain valuable assets.
Fowler noted that the New York Giants have been monitoring Wilson’s situation closely, and their level of interest could complicate Pittsburgh’s decision. The Giants, still searching for stability at quarterback, see Wilson as a potential upgrade and may be willing to make a competitive offer.
"Wilson has also been connected to the Giants by a few people this week," Fowler said via his article on ESPN. "He visited with the Giants last free agency, and New York is on his radar as a potential option in 2025."
This could actually be the best-case scenario for the Steelers. Many fans aren’t thrilled about the idea of giving Wilson a big raise in 2025 just to get similar results. While he brought experience and leadership, his play was inconsistent, and he’s not the long-term solution Pittsburgh needs.

A large portion of the fan base would rather see what Fields can do with a full season as the starter. He’s younger, more affordable, and far more athletic—traits that align with the modern NFL quarterback. If Fields can put everything together, his ceiling remains incredibly high, and he still has the potential to become a true superstar in the league. Fowler shared more insight into what he has heard regarding the Steelers level of interest in bringing back Fields for the 2025 season.
"My sense coming out of New Orleans is that the door is open for a potential deal between the Steelers and free agent Justin Fields, but it would have to make sense for Fields, who, at this stage, will most likely want a more legitimate chance to start a full season," Fowler said.
This new development puts the Steelers in a tricky position. They need to decide whether Wilson is worth a multi-year commitment or if it’s time to fully embrace Fields as the future. The last thing Pittsburgh wants is to get into a bidding war with a quarterback-needy team, especially one desperate enough to overpay for Wilson’s services. If the Steelers are serious about bringing Wilson back, they may need to act fast before another team, like the Giants, swoops in and secures him.
Steelers Might Benefit From Giants Taking Russell Wilson Away
However, this could also be the push the Steelers need to commit to Fields. At just 25 years old in 2025, he still has time to develop, and with a full season under Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith, he might take the next step in his career.
Pittsburgh has spent years searching for a long-term answer at quarterback, and if they believe Fields can be that guy, letting Wilson walk might be the best decision they can make. The Steelers now have a chance to reshape their future, but the clock is ticking on their decision.

However, Pittsburgh also has Fields to consider, and the front office may prefer to go all-in on the younger quarterback rather than engage in a bidding war for Wilson. With free agency approaching, the Steelers must decide whether to retain Wilson, commit to Fields, or explore other options entirely. One thing is clear—Pittsburgh’s quarterback dilemma isn’t going away anytime soon.
