Reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers reached out to the Jacksonville Jaguars regarding a possible trade for quarterback Trevor Lawrence recently set social media on fire. The story was dropped on X relatively causally by Ryan Burr, a basketball and golf analyst based in Florida. Burr said he'd heard it "directly from the horses mouth in the [Jaguars] organization," but almost immediately, everyone began to refute the story.

Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence prepares to hand the ball off during a 2022 regular season matchup against the Steelers.

The Jaguars reportedly responded by saying no such call had ever occurred, calling the notion "ridiculous." Jacksonville most likely believes that Lawrence is still the right quarterback for the team. While no one in the Steelers' organization has addressed the topic directly, most reporters who are close to the franchise deny that it happened.

While many applaud the alleged effort by General Manager Omar Khan to kick the tires on various options, it does raise questions about why they'd want to pay for Lawrence when they could have Justin Fields much cheaper.

Now, another NFL insider, Mike Florio from NBC Sports, is weighing in, and he thinks the Steelers might not have had anything to do with the eport. On his show NFL on NBC, Florio recapped the reports with Rodney Harrison. He said he found it odd that someone who doesn't even cover the NFL, let alone the Jaguars or the Steelers, would be reporting on a potential trade.

"The Steelers would say they never called, 'We don't even know who to call, they don't have a general manager, we're in draft meetings, we're getting ready for the Combine, we're not calling teams about quarterbacks'" Florio said. "I think this whole thing, somebody in the Jaguars' organization wants to spark a trade market potentially for Lawrence. Let's get people calling; let's see what they offer because he's not untouchable. There's an offer big enough that they would take. He's not Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen. There might be an offer big enough to get the Jaguars to act, and of course, they are going to deny it, but now everyone knows if you're looking for a quarterback and you like Trevor Lawrence, maybe you give us a call."

The Jaguars will be undergoing a major overhaul in the 2025 offseason. Ownership decided to move on from nearly everyone, including the general manager and head coach. The general manager spot had not been filled when this news broke (and it still hasn't), but Liam Coen has since been hired as their new head coach.

Steelers' Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence were in the same draft class.

Lawrence was the Jaguars' first overall pick in 2021 after Mel Kiper Jr. ranked him the fourth-best quarterback draft pick ever. He made the Pro Bowl in 2022, his best statistical season as a pro. In 2024, he only played 10 games because of a shoulder injury and after a vicious blow to the head that landed him in concussion protocol. That marked his second concussion in as many years.

Steelers Could Be A Perfect Fit For Lawrence

Harrison said that if the Steelers didn't make that call for Lawrence, they should. He believes that Lawrence and the Steelers could be a good fit for one another. Harrison said the thing that has been missing from Lawrence's career is stability, and the Steelers bring that in spades. The Steelers already have a solid defense, according to Harrison, even if there are a few tweaks to be made.

On top of that, they will have learned from the 2024 season and will go out and sign some weapons. He expects the offensive line to continue to improve with the return of Troy Fautanu. Harrison also said Lawrence may not be the quarterback everyone expected when drafted, but he believes he will excel with a team where he feels protected.
