The Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a blockbuster move on Sunday night by acquiring star wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. Metcalf officially requested a trade from Seattle, and the Steelers moved quick to trade for and sign the receiver to an extension. The organization has been looking to upgrade the wide receiver position for some time, and General Manager Omar Khan finally got the job done. Metcalf and George Pickens will make up a lethal duo, as long as Pittsburgh can find a quarterback to throw the football.

The offense sees a major upgrade with the addition of Metcalf, but the quarterback position is still a pressing issue. Pittsburgh struck out in trying to re-sign Justin Fields, and the franchise missed again when extending an offer to Sam Darnold. Two quarterbacks have passed up the starting job in Pittsburgh, which has to make Metcalf feel a bit uneasy about his new home. The two top candidates for the job currently are Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson, and neither option is extremely promising.

ESPN Analyst Dan Orlovsky spoke about the quarterback situation on Tuesday morning during an appearance on Get Up, and he believes things can get ugly quick.

"Imagine what DK Metcalf is thinking right now," Orlovsky said. "You just traded for me, you gave me $150 million. You better get somebody to throw me the ball, or all the antics and the personality that people talk about, we're gonna see it very quickly."

Metcalf is a highly talented player, but he has been known for some on-field antics. He is very similar to Pickens, where both players are extremely competitive and they let their frustrations be known when things are not going well. This is a recipe for disaster in Pittsburgh, especially if a quality quarterback is not on the field running the offense.

Metcalf did not choose the Steelers in the same way a free agent would, but he did have some say. In order for Seattle to execute a trade, Metcalf had to agree to a new contract with his new team before the trade could be agreed upon and eventually completed when the new league year began. In some way, he chose to go to Pittsburgh. He might now be regretting that decision.

Pickens and Metcalf have had their issues when it comes to hurting their team with unnecessary penalties. These penalties tend to stem from frustration, whether that be from not getting the ball, or bad quarterback play. The way things are currently going, both of those issues should be expected in Pittsburgh during the 2025 season. Head Coach Mike Tomlin is going to have his hands full when it comes to keeping his receivers in line, but that issue can be minimized if Pittsburgh can somehow find some quality quarterback play.

Steelers Will Need To Explore All Options To Find A Quality Quarterback

The Steelers have a lot of interest in Rodgers, but the veteran quarterback is currently deciding between Pittsburgh and the New York Giants. It should be a no-brainer to come to Pittsburgh, but Rodgers already has a home in New Jersey and he might be motivated to continue playing in New York.

If this is the case, the Steelers may have to move forward with Wilson. Another option for the Steelers would be taking a shot on a quarterback during the 2025 NFL Draft. It is not considered a deep draft at the quarterback position, but the Steelers could find some value in the middle or late rounds at the position. There is also the chance that the franchise has the opportunity to draft Jaxson Dart or Shedeur Sanders in the first round, although that would be a controversial move.
