The Pittsburgh Steelers have a long and impressive history. The organization has celebrated six Super Bowl championships, but the feat that may be the toughest to believe is that the franchise has only had three head coaches since the 1969 campaign. Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin have all hoisted at least one Lombardi Trophy, which is one of the biggest reasons why the team is so highly-regarded across the professional sports landscape. Noll had an unprecedented run in the 1970s, as he was able to lead the Steelers to four Super Bowl wins from 1975-1980 during an absolutely dominant run.

Both Noll and Cowher have already been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and there's no reason to doubt that Tomlin will one day also be wearing a Gold Jacket. The fact that the Steelers have been able to go over five decades with just three head coaches, and all of them will one day will have busts in Canton, is an incredibly impressive fact that may never be relevant to another organization again.

Football fans everywhere finally got the sense that the NFL is back on Thursday evening when pre-game shows began for the annual Hall of Fame game. Leading up to the contest between the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions, some of the cast of Football Night in America had some time to honor current members of the Hall of Fame. Tony Dungy had a touching tribute to his former mentor in Noll.

"Chuck Noll is a man that I don't think gets enough credit," Dungy said. "He selected and coached 12 of the players who are in this Hall of Fame, and he had a great impact on my career, teaching me how to be a coach. But more important than that, he taught us that football can't be the most important thing in your life; it has to be family and community, as well as football. He did it as well as anyone."

Dungy got his coaching career started off in 1981 when he joined the Steelers' staff as a defensive assistant coach under Noll. He would remain with the organization for several seasons, staying through the 1988 campaign. Dungy had plenty of time to be around Noll, and it's very clear that the legendary four-time Super Bowl champion made a sincere impact in Dungy's life and on his post-playing career.

Prior to coaching alongside Noll, however, Dungy played for him during the 1977 and 1978 campaigns. It sure says a lot about Noll that he was willing to bring on a former player that was just on a Super Bowl-winning roster not too many seasons prior. Noll is a legend for several different reasons, but Dungy's words are just another reminder of how highly regarded Pittsburgh's winningest coach of all time was.

One of the more notable comments from Dungy was also in reference to Noll's constant reminder that there is more than life to just football. He seemed to truly care about his players and wanted to emphasize how important family life is. Some coaches may get too caught up in wins and losses, but it is clear that Noll had strict beliefs that he would not waver from. That kind of leadership can say a lot about a person.

Steelers' Tomlin Could Break Noll's Franchise Win Record In 2025

Noll had 193 regular-season wins as the head coach in Pittsburgh. Tomlin, as the 2025 campaign rapidly approaches, is sitting at 183. If his group finds a way to win 11 games, he will surpass the legend in Noll. There is a small asterisk because teams play 17 games in present day compared to the 14 back in Noll's first nine seasons, but it's still impressive nonetheless. Tomlin may catch a lot of criticism with fans calling for his job from time to time, but he is nearing some pretty uncharted territory.
