The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 training camp has officially started, and it's bringing a lot of excitement for fans that are eager to see their favorite players back on the field. It’s also a key time for players to sharpen their skills and prepare for the season ahead. With so many new additions to the roster, this year’s camp carries even more energy and anticipation. One of the highlights of camp is the offense versus defense drills, which not only give players valuable reps, but also spark intense competition, raising the level of intensity across the board.

During a training camp drill, Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey was matched up against wide receiver Calvin Austin III, and the two got in each other's faces after the play. Despite the intensity, Austin later told the media that he views the competitiveness as a positive. He explained that it pushes him to improve and gives him a realistic preview of game-day battles. His response reflects his dedication to training and determination to earn more playing time this season.
"Being the player he is — a top defender regardless of position — going against him is going to push me to be my best," Austin said. "Hopefully that leads to Sunday when I’d have a matchup that I’m used to seeing or one not as good [as Ramsey]. Those are valuable reps, and I’m taking advantage of every opportunity."
The wide receiver position has been a major topic of conversation throughout the 2025 offseason due to several changes. For years, the Steelers have been searching for a reliable second option in the receiving game. It seemed that need was finally met with the addition of veteran star wide receiver DK Metcalf.
However, after the departure of George Pickens, who was formerly the team’s top pass-catcher, that void has reopened, leaving the Steelers once again looking to solidify their receiving corps before the season begins.

Since then, the Steelers have been linked to several available wide receivers, but none of those rumors led to actual signings. This suggested to many that the organization is confident in the current group of receivers. That confidence was confirmed when Steelers wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni officially named Austin as the team's wide receiver two.
There are still concerns about whether Austin can consistently perform at the level expected of a true wide receiver two, something that's become absolutely necessary in today’s league. However, Austin has remained optimistic, using the doubts as motivation to prove he’s ready for the role. As a player drafted by the Steelers, this season presents a real opportunity for him to step up and make a significant impact on the offense.
This becomes even more interesting with the arrival of veteran quarterback and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers and Austin have already begun building chemistry, and early signs suggest that Austin’s playing style could complement Rodgers well. Some reports have even speculated that Austin might become Rodgers’ new version of Randall Cobb, one of the quarterback’s all-time favorite targets.

Now that Austin is stepping into the role of the second wide receiver, there’s a real possibility he could be the next player the team looks to extend. He’s currently on his rookie contract, which is set to expire at the end of the upcoming season.
Some reports suggest the Steelers may try to sign him to an extension sooner rather than later, before he potentially gets more expensive. This only adds to the pressure on Austin to prove himself, not just during the season but throughout training camp and every team activity leading up to it.
Steelers Have Surrounded Rodgers With Receiving Weapons
Alongside Metcalf and Austin in the wide receiver group, other positions are also expected to see a fair share of targets, especially the tight ends. The position has created plenty of discussion as a receiving threat, especially with the addition of Jonnu Smith, who came in the same trade as Ramsey.
Like Ramsey, Smith’s versatility has made a strong impression. He’s even been praised as one of the best in the NFL when it comes to yards after the catch. With a bunch of receiving weapons, the Steelers’ passing game has the potential to take a big step up this season.
