Steelers' DK Metcalf Has Proven To Be The "Total Opposite" Of George Pickens So Far

The Pittsburgh Steelers have kicked off training camp, giving fans a first real look at all the offseason changes in action. While some positions, like quarterback, had a complete overhaul, others, such as wide receiver, saw changes in who holds the first spot on the depth chart. These changes have created a lot of discussions, with many weighing in on the current state of the wide receiver group especially.

George Pickens was the wide receiver one for the Steelers in recent seasons, and when the team brought in DK Metcalf earlier this offseason, many believed the two would be an unstoppable duo. However, after Pickens’ departure, many quickly assumed it was related to maturity concerns, something the Steelers are no strangers to. In a recent interview on 93.7 The Fan, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly suggested that the decision to move on from Pickens was likely backed by players in the locker room.

"It's become clearer and clearer that George Pickens was not a guy they wanted around anymore," Kaboly said. "I'm talking the team in general because of the potential attitude... DK Metcalf is the total opposite."

Pickens isn’t the first Steelers receiver to raise concerns about locker room behavior. Before him, there were similar issues with Chase Claypool and, earlier, Antonio Brown; names that Kaboly specifically mentioned when making his point. Kaboly explained that Metcalf is the complete opposite of Pickens in terms of attitude, and added by suggesting that with Metcalf’s arrival, the team may finally be breaking the cycle of troubled wide receivers.

"You're not going to have issues with Metcalf like you did with Pickens, Antonio [Brown], and Chase Claypool," Kaboly added.

Metcalf is known for his passion for the game, something that like with Pickens, has occasionally gotten him into trouble on the field. However, when that passion is channeled positively, it can light a fire under the offense and bring a real spark to the team. What sets Metcalf apart is his unique combination of size and speed, something that makes him a force on the field and a player that fans are eager to watch in action.

However, some are skeptical about why these locker room concerns keep happening. That said, the Steelers are staying focused on the season ahead and putting in the work to find success now. Metcalf was brought in to be a key weapon for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a future Hall of Famer who appears to be nearing the end of his career. While Rodgers initially said this would likely be his final season, some of his more recent comments have left fans wondering if he might stick around a little longer.

Still, Metcalf has been building strong chemistry with Rodgers. Even before Rodgers officially signed with the Steelers, the two were spotted working out and throwing the football together. That early connection has only grown stronger. Despite Rodgers’ first training camp pass resulting in an interception, the duo quickly bounced back, earning praise for a standout touchdown play, not just from media across the league, but from Head Coach Mike Tomlin himself.

The Steelers Still Look Ahead

There’s no denying the pressure surrounding the Steelers heading into this season. While Metcalf is secured on a five-year deal, other players like Rodgers, are nearing the end of their careers, making the urgency for success even greater. Training camp has certainly brought excitement and optimism, but it’s the regular season that will truly reveal how much progress this team has made.

The Steelers have consistently done enough to reach the playoffs, but they’ve just as consistently been eliminated in the first round. This year, simply making the postseason won’t cut it, as regular season success will hopefully carry into playoff wins. With added pressure heading into 2025, the focus is on making a deeper run. While they may have their eye on some position groups in the 2026 NFL Draft, the priority right now is clear.
