The Pittsburgh Steelers have dominated headlines throughout the offseason, making a bunch of bold moves that have completely reshaped the team’s look. The biggest spotlight has been on the quarterback position, and specifically, the huge addition of veteran quarterback and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Given Rodgers’ successful career up to this point, it’s no surprise that his arrival has brought significant attention and raised expectations across the league.

However, there are still a few concerns when it comes to Rodgers’ game compared to other quarterbacks across the league. Recently, Steelers insider Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette appeared on The North Shore Drive podcast to discuss training camp and expectations for the upcoming season. During the conversation, Batko pointed out what he sees as a lingering concern for Rodgers as he prepares to lead the team this year.

"I do feel like one of the criticisms of Rodgers, certainly last year with the [New York] Jets, and maybe even at the end of his time with the [Green Bay] Packers, was very risk adverse, wants to protect the ball which is good, but not necessarily putting himself among the league's elite in terms of throwing the deep ball and giving his receivers a chance to make those explosive plays," Batko said.

One of Rodgers’ greatest strengths, and what has long set him apart from other quarterbacks is his exceptional arm talent. Some of his most iconic plays have come from deep, unexpected throws, including crazy Hail Mary passes. At the same time, Rodgers holds the impressive title of being tied for the lowest interception rate in NFL history, something that comes from his cautious decision-making.

Batko’s comment becomes even more interesting when you consider how the Steelers have been building their offense around Rodgers. The team hasn’t just added more offensive weapons, they’ve specifically surrounded him with dynamic receiving threats capable of making plays downfield. From tight ends to wide receivers, the roster is being shaped to complement a high-powered passing attack. Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith has even stated publicly that he plans to tailor the playbook to highlight Rodgers’ strengths, which is most notably, his arm talent.

Rodgers has also been developing strong chemistry with DK Metcalf, the veteran wide receiver the Steelers acquired this offseason. Even before Rodgers officially signed with Pittsburgh, the two were spotted training and throwing together during the offseason. Now, with training camp in full swing, they’ve become suitemates and are quickly drawing the attention of fans with their on-field chemistry and off-field camaraderie.

After a surprising and disappointing interception on Rodgers’ first pass of camp, intended for Metcalf, the duo quickly bounced back in a big way. Later, Rodgers connected with Metcalf on a perfectly placed touchdown pass that turned heads across the league. The play got significant media attention and was even highlighted by Head Coach Mike Tomlin during a media session, where he said that it was exactly what they had envisioned when the Steelers brought both players in.

Steelers Wishing For A More Explosive Offensive Attack

Despite Batko’s comment about Rodgers occasionally being too cautious, all signs point to Smith aiming to build an explosive offense. During the 2025 NFL Draft, after the team made several key additions, Smith openly stated his intention to shape this explosive type of offense around Metcalf. With his combination of speed and strength, Metcalf is well-equipped to deliver the kind of big plays Smith envisions as a big part of the Steelers’ offensive scheme. It will be exciting to watch how the growing chemistry between Rodgers and Metcalf translates into explosive potential on the field.

It’s no secret that the Steelers’ offensive line faces added pressure this season, not only to protect Rodgers, but also to give him the time and space needed to create explosive plays downfield. Many believe that Rodgers’ success could largely depend on the performance of the offensive line, making their role more vital than ever in the team’s overall offensive success.
