The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted linebacker Payton Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The idea of getting Wilson, who was viewed by many as possibly the most talented inside linebacker in the entire class, in the third round was widely seen as a steal. What caused his slide on draft day was his lengthy injury history, which raised concerns about his long-term durability despite his clear athletic ability and playmaking instincts.

Still, in his short time with the Steelers, Wilson has given fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic about his future. From his natural instincts in coverage to his aggressive tackling in the run game, the linebacker has shown flashes that suggest he could develop into a high-impact player. His strong work ethic and quick grasp of the defensive system have impressed coaches and teammates during training camp and preseason action.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin recently spoke with Mark Kaboly and offered a confident endorsement of Wilson’s development. Tomlin praised the second year linebackers focus, attention to detail, and willingness to learn, saying he is exactly where the team hoped he would be at this point. While it's still early, the Steelers clearly believe Wilson has the potential to grow into a key contributor on their defense.

"We don’t wait until in-stadium action to explore that," Tomlin said. "Every day that we give Patrick Queen off, he instantly becomes the quarterback of the defense. You have to develop leadership and leaders, and where he is in his career is appropriate. That’s what I mean when I say we have a different agenda in terms of guys' off days. It is not only the preservation of those guys, but it is the elevation of others."

The Steelers have Patrick Queen wearing the green dot on defense, a clear sign of trust as it designates him the quarterback of the unit. He’s the one responsible for communicating plays and making adjustments on the field. But whenever Queen takes a veteran rest day during training camp, Tomlin revealed that Wilson immediately steps into that role without hesitation.

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen (6) participates in the Organized Team Activities (OTAs), Tuesday May 27, 2025 at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Tomlin exposed that a veteran day off is sometimes just as much about evaluating depth players as it is about giving the veteran a rest. In this case it gives Wilson the unique chance to practice taking command over that defense when Queen gets a day off. That's a massive win for Wilson in terms of his growth.

That’s a major endorsement for a player entering just his second NFL season, especially on a defense as crowded and talented as Pittsburgh’s. With veterans and rising stars all over the linebacker room, Wilson standing out as the next man up in the green dot role speaks volumes about how far he’s come in his development.

The praise from Tomlin has only added to the excitement surrounding Wilson heading into 2025. After an encouraging rookie campaign and a full offseason to improve, many fans are eager to see just how much better he’s gotten. If training camp is any indication, Wilson is quickly becoming a trusted and vital piece of the Steelers' defensive future.

Every snap Wilson takes with the green dot brings him closer to being a true leader on the field, and the Steelers clearly believe he has that potential. With such high internal expectations, Wilson’s continued development will be one of the most exciting storylines to follow as the 2025 season approaches.
