Steelers' TJ Watt Sends Direct Message To Fans After Recent Performances

The Pittsburgh Steelers paid superstar pass rusher TJ Watt a massive extension in the 2025 offseason. Now making $41 million per year, Watt has been the cornerstone of the Steelers’ defense for years. His ability to consistently pressure quarterbacks and create game-changing plays has set him apart as one of the league’s elite pass rushers. While Watt has rarely gone multiple games without recording a sack, it has been quite some time since his last full sack, which came during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 season.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson gets sacked by Steelers' TJ Watt.

Through the first two games of the 2025 season, Watt faced criticism for his lack of impact, with fans and analysts alike questioning whether he was still the dominant force he had been in previous years. Despite the slow start, Watt has remained focused on improving his game and finding ways to return to his disruptive form. He has acknowledged the challenges of adjusting to opposing offensive schemes that are increasingly designed to neutralize his pass rush, and he is determined to make meaningful adjustments to stay ahead of blockers.

Speaking with Steelers reporter Teresa Varley, Watt discussed several solutions he is working on to regain his impact on the field. These include refining his pass-rush techniques, improving his timing off the snap, and collaborating more closely with the Steelers’ coaching staff to identify tendencies in opposing offenses. Watt’s goal is to make a major statement in Week 3 against the New England Patriots, demonstrating that he remains a cornerstone of Pittsburgh’s defensive identity and a true game-changer when it matters most.

"I'm not affecting the game like I want to," said Watt. "Trying to find each and every way to do so. Trying to turn over every stone. Trying to flip sides, trying stunts. Trying to do everything. Trying to get better each and every day. I'm just trying to make an impact anyway I possibly can."

Many Steelers fans think it’s as simple as lining Watt up on different sides, but the reality is more complicated. Opposing offenses can quickly identify his position, and it’s not as disguised as fans might believe. There are stunts, twists, and other schemes the Steelers can try to increase his effectiveness, and it sounds like Watt believes there’s still more that can be done to maximize his impact.

Steelers fans would certainly love to see every possible adjustment explored, just as Watt suggested, to help him dominate at the level they’ve come to expect.

"Obviously, not being able to stop the run, getting as many hats to the ball as possible, creating more splash," said Watt. "We had two picks, but just long drives. Not being able get off the field on third down has been killing us. A lot of things that aren't representative of what we stand for here at the Pittsburgh Steelers, especially our defensive side of the ball. I feel good about the week we had this week, but I said that last week, so it really doesn't matter unless we perform."

Steelers' Defense Is Confident Heading Into New England

Watt explained that the unit feels good heading into the game against New England. However, he is cautious, noting that the team felt confident in both of the first two weeks as well, yet the defense gave up nearly 800 yards of total offense during those games.

The Steelers’ defense will be tasked with seeking redemption against the young, promising quarterback Drake Maye, as well as New England’s rushing attack led by Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. It won’t be easy, but if the Steelers’ defense can play at a high level, it has the potential to shift momentum in their favor quickly.
