Steelers Reunion Could Happen Now As They Explore Drawing Retired Lineman Back To Team

The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line has been a bit of a worry to start the 2025 season. Though the line didn’t give up any sacks in Week 3 against the New England Patriots, concerns remain about its overall performance. Former Steelers great quarterback Ben Roethlisberger pointed out some major issues, expressing particular concern about Broderick Jones’ struggles and how Aaron Rodgers has often had little time in the pocket due to inconsistent line play. Despite these challenges, the Steelers offensive line is expected to continue working hard to gel and improve as the season progresses.

One notable development came on Tuesday when the Steelers hosted former offensive lineman Nate Herbig. This news comes via the NFL.com waiver wire. The recently retired veteran drew attention as he appeared interested in potentially coming out of retirement to rejoin the team. Herbig’s presence and experience could provide valuable support to the young offensive line, both on the field and in mentoring roles.

As the Steelers move forward, the combination of developing young talent like Jones and the possible return of a seasoned player like Herbig will be critical. The team is focused on building cohesion and minimizing mistakes to protect Rodgers and maintain a competitive edge. With the regular season still unfolding, fans will be watching closely to see if the line can stabilize and become a reliable unit for the Steelers’ offense.

The Steelers offensive line is currently anchored by Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick, Isaac Seumalo, Jones, and Troy Fautanu. While this group has plenty of talent, it is notably young for the NFL, and that inexperience has been a point of concern for the team. During the 2024 season, they hit what many would call a "rookie wall," struggling at times to handle the speed and power of professional defensive fronts. As the Steelers look ahead, questions remain about how quickly this young unit can develop consistency and cohesion against elite pass rushers week in and week out.

Rodgers, now 41 years old, remains a rare talent with an elite arm that can still make throws few others in the league can attempt. The challenge for Pittsburgh is not his ability to execute plays but ensuring he has the time and protection necessary to do so. With a younger line, even Rodgers’ elite skills could be jeopardized if the offensive front cannot consistently hold up under pressure.

To address these concerns, the Steelers are focused on continued development and reinforcement of the line through coaching, chemistry, and possibly even roster additions. Mentorship from veteran players, like the recently hosted Herbig, could provide invaluable guidance for these young linemen.

If this group can gel and protect Rodgers effectively, Pittsburgh’s offense could combine the experience of its veteran quarterback with the energy and potential of its young talent, creating a balanced and formidable unit for the 2025 season and beyond.

Steelers' Reunion with Nate Herbig Makes Sense

The Steelers lost veteran depth on their offensive line with Max Scharping, who will be out for the 2025 season. Ryan McCollum serves as the backup center, but Herbig, who has experience at center and guard, could provide a versatile replacement.

Herbig retired due to injury, but if he’s interested in returning and the Steelers are willing to give him a shot, a reunion could be imminent.
