The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted wide receiver Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Many pundits believed the Steelers’ selection of the Michigan prospect 84th overall was a steal. Expectations were high that Wilson would see playing time in his rookie season, but an early injury, combined with struggles to get on what Head Coach Mike Tomlin described as a "moving train," kept Wilson sidelined for nearly all of 2024. The anticipation of seeing the rookie in action was met with frustration from fans and analysts alike.

Now in the 2025 season, Wilson’s opportunities have been few and far between through the first six games. Despite limited targets and snaps, the second-year receiver has remained focused and determined. His patience and work ethic have not gone unnoticed by teammates and coaches, who believe Wilson is steadily carving out his role within the offense.

On Wednesday, Wilson spoke with Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, expressing confidence in the player he is becoming. He emphasized that while he wanted to be careful in his approach, he also wanted to stake his claim as the same stud wide receiver Pittsburgh drafted in the third round. Wilson’s words signal a readiness to make a bigger impact, and Steelers fans are eager to see him live up to the promise that made him such a coveted addition to the team.

"I feel like — let me choose my words wisely — the player they drafted, I’m still that guy," Wilson said Wednesday after practice. "I don't wanna say anything wrong. I’m just gonna leave it at that. The player they thought they drafted, that’s who I am."

Batko was curious to know exactly what kind of player the Steelers had drafted. Wilson responded in a way that clarified his comments while also showing how much of a team player he is.

Pittsburgh believed they were getting an essential, all-in wide receiver when they selected Wilson, and though his development has been slower than expected, he is starting to gain footing on the depth chart. With his growth and determination, more opportunities could be on the horizon.

"Whatever they want," Wilson said to Batko. "I’m more focused on winning games than all the extra stuff."

DK Metcalf and Rodgers have formed a budding connection, which many saw coming. However, Calvin Austin III has continued to impress. When healthy, he has proven to be a reliable option in this passing attack. The issue has been Austin’s injury, which has put the wide receiver position in a tough spot, but he appears to be on track to return in Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers.

Steelers' Roman Wilson Finally Gaining Momentum

While Austin was out against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7, Wilson saw more playing time. He caught both of his targets for 17 yards, but it was the other aspects of his performance that drew attention from pundits and insiders. He looked crisp running his routes, played with effort, and made smart decisions on the field.

Wilson knows the expectations on him and is aware that fans’ patience has been wearing thin. He isn’t concerned about that, though, and is focused solely on improving and helping the team win. His dedication and approach show that he’s ready to earn a bigger role as the season progresses.
