The Pittsburgh Steelers came into the 2025 season with very high expectations for their defense. While there were many question marks surrounding the offense, no one expected the defense to be holding the team back. Instead, it has struggled mightily, ranking among the worst units in the NFL by nearly every key metric. It has been a brutal start for Pittsburgh’s defense, yet the team sits at 4-3 and still holds first place in the AFC North.

Packers QB Jordan Love uncorks a deep ball during a home game in Pittsburgh.
After getting diced up by Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, Steelers longtime defensive captain Cam Heyward met with members of the Pittsburgh media to share his perspective on the struggles. Heyward’s comments were candid and direct, offering a rare inside look at what he believes is happening on the defensive side of the ball.

Interestingly, Heyward seemed to place the blame on the players rather than Head Coach Mike Tomlin or Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin’s schemes and game plans. He emphasized accountability and suggested that the talent and effort on the field are not matching expectations. His remarks reflect both frustration and leadership, signaling that change needs to come from within the defensive unit itself if the Steelers hope to maintain their position atop the AFC North.
"Good teams can just be simple and get it done," Heyward told several members of the Pittsburgh media on Thursday afternoon. "Rally to the ball and you know, you can show different coverages, you can move around, but I don't think it comes down to all the X's and O's. I think it just comes down to the execution and finishing plays."
Heyward’s remarks have sparked conversation across Steeler Nation, with fans and analysts debating whether the defensive issues are truly about effort or if there are deeper personnel and schematic problems.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin stands next to captains Aaron Rodgers and Cam Heyward before the 2025 season opener.
While some believe the players simply need to execute better, others point to the lack of consistent pass rush, coverage breakdowns, and missed tackles as evidence that the unit is more flawed than it should be for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
Despite the struggles, there are glimpses of hope. Young players and rotational defenders have shown flashes of talent, and Heyward’s leadership remains a stabilizing presence in the locker room. He has consistently set the tone for accountability and intensity, and his public defense of the coaching staff suggests he is trying to protect the larger structure while motivating his teammates to elevate their performance.
Steelers' Defense Seriously Hurting Pittsburgh's Chances To End Playoff Drought
The Steelers now face a critical stretch of the season where the defense will need to tighten up if the team wants to maintain its lead in the AFC North. With key matchups ahead, fans will be watching closely to see if Heyward’s call for accountability translates into tangible improvement on the field. One thing is certain: the team’s success may hinge on whether the defense can finally live up to the high expectations set at the start of the season.

Steelers superstar pass rusher TJ Watt talks with longtime defensive leader Cam Heyward during training camp.
The Steelers defense has too much talent on it, with TJ Watt and Heyward to name just a couple. Yet they haven’t performed up to the hype since the preseason, and the unit has struggled significantly. They have been leaky and unable to stop much of anything. If Pittsburgh wants to end their playoff drought in the 2025 season, the defense must improve quickly—and Heyward knows that.
