Pittsburgh Steelers superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf was expected to cause fewer issues than George Pickens. Fair or not, that was the assumption many around the league made when Pittsburgh reshaped its wide receiver room and brought Metcalf into the locker room. To be fair to Pickens, Metcalf has contributed his own share of drama throughout his Steelers' career. At the same time, he has consistently been described as an exceptional teammate, a relentless worker, and one of the most physically imposing wide receivers in the NFL. That's exactly why the Steelers made the trade to land Metcalf and invest a large amount of money in him.

That complicated reputation is what makes the latest situation involving Metcalf so difficult to fully understand. On a recent episode of Footbahlin, Steelers legend and former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger addressed the incident and hinted that, despite the controversy, this moment could ultimately serve as a turning point for Metcalf and the Steelers. Before getting into why Roethlisberger sees potential upside, it’s important to understand just how unclear the situation in Detroit actually is.
The Steelers sure dodged a bullet with Pickens. What they really needed was a level headed, no nonsense WR like DK Metcalf. pic.twitter.com/GeoEHnbbl7

Whatever truly happened between Metcalf and a Detroit Lions fan during Sunday’s game is hard to know with certainty. There has been a wave of conflicting information about what was said, what escalated the interaction, and what ultimately led Metcalf to put his hands on the fan. Different angles, differing reports, and emotional reactions from all sides have made it difficult to piece together a clear and consistent timeline of events. Either way, Roethlisberger explained on his podcast why he's optimistic about the Metcalf suspension.
"With the DK [Metcalf] situation and missing the next two games, I think what this could end up doing, as crazy as it sounds, is it could benefit us," Roethlisberger said Tuesday on his Footbahlin podcast. "Because we're gonna have to see who else can play. I assume Roman Wilson is gonna finally get a hat and get out there."
Roethlisberger was careful to acknowledge that he does not have all the answers, but he still raised a point that is worth serious consideration. Second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson has not had many opportunities to establish a consistent role so far, but this situation could finally open that door.

With Metcalf sidelined, the Steelers are going to need other receivers to step up, and while the team does have depth, the overall talent at the position remains thin.
"So, you're gonna see [Calvin] Austin [III], Wilson, [Adam] Thielen, [Marquez Valdes-Scantling], I assume, if he's okay after hitting the ground, Kenny [Gainwell]. We're gonna see our tight ends," Roethlisberger said. "We're gonna see who can step up and maybe Aaron [Rodgers] get confidence in them knowing that when DK comes back for the postseason, now you just add that to it."
Steelers Likely To Get TE's More Involved While DK Metcalf Serves Suspension
There are veterans in the room, but there is no clear replacement for Metcalf’s physical presence on the outside. That reality could force Pittsburgh to adjust its approach and lean more heavily on the tight ends.

Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, Jonnu Smith, and even Connor Heyward are all capable of handling expanded roles and becoming more involved in the passing game. That is why Roethlisberger is choosing to look at the bright side, viewing this suspension not only as a setback, but also as an opportunity for others to grow and for the offense to evolve.
