The Pittsburgh Steelers got word on Thursday via Jeremy Fowler that special teams ace Miles Killebrew would be leaving the team. Killebrew was a free agent, and many Steelers fans were hoping he would return. During his time in Pittsburgh from 2021 to 2025, Killebrew became a trusted member of the special teams unit, known for his tackling, leadership, and consistent presence in critical game situations. He formed a strong connection with former special teams coach Danny Smith, a relationship that clearly shaped much of Killebrew’s success in the NFL. Under Smith’s guidance, Killebrew developed into one of the league’s most reliable coverage players and even earned All-Pro recognition for his performance in 2023.

After Mike Tomlin made it known he was stepping away from coaching the Steelers following the 2025 season, many wondered what changes could occur in the roster and coaching staff. The Steelers had already experienced significant turnover, which was somewhat expected after Tomlin hung up his clipboard after 19 years at the helm. With so many moving parts, Killebrew’s departure adds another layer of transition for the organization.

"All-Pro special teamer Miles Killebrew is signing with the Bucs on a one-year deal at around $1.8M, per source," Fowler said. "Reuniting with Special Teams Coordinator Danny Smith from their Pittsburgh days."

Now, Killebrew follows his former special teams coach to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signing a reported $1.8 million deal. This is a steal for Tampa Bay, as they now add a 2023 All-Pro in Killebrew to their roster. Special teams signings often fly under the radar, but this one stands out and it is certainly frustrating for Steelers fans to see him leave.

At first glance, Steelers fans may be shocked that the organization did not match or exceed that offer. Questions are bound to arise: did the team genuinely pass on retaining Killebrew, or did the player simply have a strong desire to reunite with Smith? Considering Killebrew built his NFL career under Smith in Pittsburgh, it seems plausible that loyalty and familiarity played a major role in his decision. For a player who thrived under a particular coach, the opportunity to continue that partnership elsewhere can be very appealing.

The move also highlights the impact that coaching relationships can have on a player’s career. Killebrew’s development, recognition, and eventual market value were closely tied to Smith’s system and mentorship. When a trusted coach leaves, it is natural for players who rely on that system to consider following them to maintain continuity in their professional growth.

Steelers' Special Teams Under New Guidance With Danny Crossman

For the Steelers, this means their special teams unit moves forward without one of its most dependable contributors. Danny Crossman, the new special teams coach, faces the task of stabilizing the unit and proving that the group can perform at a high level despite recent departures. Crossman inherits a roster in transition, but he also has the opportunity to reshape the culture and performance of the unit, addressing the inconsistencies that sometimes plagued Smith’s group toward the end of his tenure in Pittsburgh.

Smith was widely regarded as an above-average coach, but in his final seasons, the special teams units under his guidance were not quite the dominant force many expected. Killebrew’s departure leaves a hole in leadership and experience, but it also signals a fresh start.

Fans will be watching closely to see how the Steelers adapt, whether Crossman can instill consistency, and how the team handles the new era of special teams play without one of its most accomplished recent stars. While Killebrew embarks on a new chapter in Tampa Bay, the Steelers now have the chance to redefine their unit and demonstrate that Pittsburgh football remains resilient, even amid turnover.
