The Pittsburgh Steelers have their entire fan base locked in on what this new direction is going to look like now that Mike McCarthy has taken over as head coach. After years of falling short in the postseason under Mike Tomlin, the frustration has built to a point where simply being competitive is no longer enough. Steelers fans are used to championship expectations, and going more than a decade without seriously being in the Super Bowl conversation has clearly worn thin. That’s why this transition feels different. There’s real pressure on McCarthy to deliver right away, and 2026 is shaping up to be a defining year for where this organization is headed.

A big part of that pressure comes from the fact that Pittsburgh is loaded heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. Not only do they have 12 picks to work with, but the draft itself will be hosted in the Steel City, adding even more attention to what they do. This is a rare opportunity for the Steelers to flip their roster in a meaningful way, especially under a new coaching staff and vision. General manager Omar Khan and McCarthy both understand that getting this draft right could accelerate the rebuild and quickly put Pittsburgh back into legitimate contention. With that many selections, there’s no excuse not to come away with impact players on both sides of the ball.
That’s why the latest report tied to Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren should have Steelers fans paying close attention. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Warren has been making the rounds with several teams, including the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, and Atlanta Falcons, and is set to finish that stretch with a visit to Pittsburgh.
"Source: Toledo S Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is currently visiting the Dolphins after concluding recent visits with the Patriots, Browns, Cowboys and Falcons — and finishes with the Steelers tomorrow," Schultz said on Wednesday. "The former All-American has a strong chance to become a 1st-round pick."
For the Steelers, getting one of those final visits with Warren is significant. It shows that he’s not just on their radar, but potentially a real target as they look to reshape their defense. With a new era underway and expectations already ramping up, adding a high-impact player in the secondary could be exactly the kind of move that energizes the fan base and signals that Pittsburgh is serious about getting back to where it believes it belongs.

With Jalen Ramsey expected to transition back to safety in 2026, the position is getting more attention across the league, even for teams that may not see it as an immediate need. For the Steelers, safety isn’t necessarily at the top of the priority list heading into the draft, but it’s one of those spots that can quietly become a strength with the right investment. In a league that continues to emphasize versatility and playmaking on the back end, adding the right piece could elevate the entire defense.
Steelers Could Make Wise Investment For The Future In Round 1
That’s what makes a player like McNeil-Warren so intriguing in this situation. The Steelers have solid starters in DeShon Elliott and Jaquan Brisker, and on paper, they’re set for 2026. But beyond that, there are questions about long-term stability and depth, especially when you consider how quickly injuries can shift everything. More importantly, Pittsburgh has been missing that true ball-hawking presence at safety, the kind of player who can flip momentum with a takeaway and consistently impact the passing game.

If Warren is still on the board at No. 21, it would be a move that makes a lot of sense for Patrick Graham's defense and this defense moving forward. Adding a young, high-upside playmaker to the secondary could pay dividends for years, even if it’s not viewed as an urgent need today. The fact that Pittsburgh is having him in for a visit speaks to their interest in him.
