Steelers' Cam Heyward Issues Powerful Notice To Aaron Rodgers: "That's All We Need"

When the Pittsburgh Steelers entered talks with Aaron Rodgers leading into the 2025 NFL season, there was plenty of debate about what was causing the holdup. The Rodgers saga dragged on, and Steelers fans grew frustrated with the long wait. Eventually, as many expected, Rodgers did indeed team up with Mike Tomlin for the 2025 season. He led the Steelers to an AFC North title and a 10–7 regular season record. However, the playoff drought continued, and Tomlin ultimately chose to step away after the season.

Former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin beats his chest while walking off the field with Aaron Rodgers and Cam Heyward.

Given how highly Rodgers spoke of Tomlin when he decided to join Pittsburgh, many assumed that it would be a one-year partnership when he walked away. Since then, however, rumors have begun to grow again, especially after former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy took over in Pittsburgh. There is now a strong belief that Rodgers could be back with the Steelers in 2026. While everyone waits to see what happens next, Cam Heyward joined Rich Eisen on his show Friday.

During the Rodgers waiting game leading into the 2025 season, Heyward made headlines when he said, "Either Rodgers wants to be a Steeler or he doesn’t." Obviously, Heyward and Rodgers went on to become teammates and developed a close friendship. Now, Eisen asked Heyward what his message would be to Rodgers as the Steelers once again find themselves in the same waiting game this time around. Heyward issued a much different sentiment this offseason.

"I don’t want to say the same thing because he has worn the black and gold," Heyward said while speaking with Eisen on Friday. "Just return, baby, that is all we need. You know, I think he had a fun time being part of this crew. We really enjoyed his company, but I would like to be able to, you know, uh, run it back with him."

When news broke ahead of the 2025 season that Rodgers would be considering the Steelers, the first thought among Steeler Nation was, 'please no,' as what happened with the New York Jets was abysmal. Quickly, Tomlin realized that Rodgers wasn’t the problem and believed he could help them win games for one more season.

Tomlin was somewhat correct, as Rodgers put up 3,322 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. He also completed a solid 65.7% of his throws. The issue is that Rodgers will be turning 43 years old in the 2026 season. Still, Heyward and the veterans in that locker room seem to be all in on another year of Rodgers.

Steelers Stare At Same Crossroads Once Again

At this point, the Steelers are basically staring at the same crossroads again. The production is still there on paper, but the long-term picture is doing most of the talking. It feels less about whether Rodgers can play and more about whether it makes sense to keep repeating this kind of short-term setup.

What makes it tricky is the locker room reality. Guys like Heyward are not just tolerating Rodgers, they genuinely seem bought in. That kind of veteran belief carries weight in Pittsburgh, especially when the results were at least competitive last season.

Still, the front office has to decide if 'competitive' is enough anymore. Another year of Rodgers might keep them in the mix, but it also pushes the bigger reset further down the road. At some point, they have to decide if they are building toward something or just running it back again.
