Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers have not been happy with the results for the organization for several seasons now. It got so bad that Steelers fans were even begging the franchise to move on and fire Mike Tomlin. The Black and Gold faithful ended up getting their wish, but not in the way they really imagined. When the 2025 season ended, Tomlin made it known he would be stepping away from coaching the game of football. It was a move no one truly expected, but it had been rumored for a couple of seasons. Now, Tomlin will be joining NBC’s Football Night in America to be on their panel before big games.

For the Steelers, they move onward with Mike McCarthy in his first year as the head coach. He hired defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to come in and lead the defense. McCarthy is a lot different than Tomlin because Tomlin was a defensive-minded leader.

In fact, so much so that Steelers fans actually believe Tomlin was more responsible for the defense’s failures over the last few seasons than even former defensive play-caller Teryl Austin was. That can be debated, but one thing that can’t is that Tomlin had a major hand in the defense, and he would be the first to tell you he didn’t live up to his own defensive standard of excellence.

Now, Steelers fans believe the defensive scheme under Tomlin was outdated and are hopeful tha Graham and McCarthy implement more modern approaches. While speaking with the media on Tuesday, Steelers star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. gave Steelers faithful a reason for optimism about the defensive changes.

"I got a little bit of learning to do. You know, it’s a whole new defense and a whole new scheme," Porter said while speaking to the Pittsburgh media on Tuesday. "Patrick Graham, Jason Simmons, and Joe Whitt have been doing a great job introducing the playbook to us and their scheme. It has been really helpful."

Some still fear that the Steelers way in terms of defense would still overly stick even post-Tomlin. Though, it does sound like a new scheme is being implemented. This will give Steelers fans new life and a new reason for optimism about how the highly invested in defense may look in 2026.

The Steelers signed edge rusher Nick Herbig to a big payday on Tuesday, extending him for four years worth up to $100 million. Now, they are trying to get an extension done with their other exciting and young defensive talent in Porter.

The most exciting part about Graham and McCarthy is that there are a lot of unknowns. What Steelers fans knew during the previous seasons under Tomlin and Austin was that the defense was incredibly highly paid and well invested. Despite that, they watched their defense routinely get exposed in pitch-and-catch type games all season long. Now with Graham in town, there’s a real sense that this defense will tighten up and finally live up to the billing of its immense payroll.

Steelers Have Exciting Outlook On 2026 Season

With Aaron Rodgers back and the offense improving in critical areas, as well as the third phase of the game getting a reason for new life under special teams coordinator Danny Crossman, there is a real sense of belief that Pittsburgh should have an exciting outlook on the 2026 season.

If Rodgers can be even 60% of his former self and this defense can live up to the hype, then maybe Pittsburgh can finally end its disappointing playoff-win drought.
