Aaron Rodgers’ first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers has already created plenty of headlines, but the biggest storyline might not even be happening on the field. After joining Pittsburgh for the 2025 season, Rodgers made it seem like that would be his last ride in the NFL. However, Rodgers changed his mind and is now playing his final season in 2026 in the Steel City. No one ever truly knows what the unpredictable Rodgers is going to do. This time, though, he seems genuine when saying that after the 2026 season comes to an end, he will finally hang up his cleats and retire his four-time MVP arm for good.

With the summer months bringing a quieter stretch for football news, Rodgers gave fans something to talk about when pictures from a Steelers offseason trip started making their way around social media. Rodgers posted photos from the getaway on Instagram, calling it “Last Rodeo” and adding the hashtag “bonding week.” The post immediately grabbed attention because it gave fans a look at Rodgers spending time with some of his new teammates away from the field.

The group took part in a Western-themed retreat that included activities like horseback riding, fishing, paddleboarding, and relaxing together around a campfire. Some of the Steelers players who were shown during the trip included DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., Pat Freiermuth, Mason Rudolph, Ben Skowronek, and Roman Wilson. However, once fans started looking through the pictures, one name stood out because he wasn’t there. That name was none other than second-year QB Will Howard.
Almost immediately, Steelers fans began asking questions. Why was Rudolph there, but not Howard? Was there a reason the young quarterback wasn’t included in Rodgers’ team bonding event? That led to some speculation from people covering the Steelers that Howard may not have received an invitation in the first place.
Some things that stick out to me about the Aaron Rodgers retreat. He’s next to Roman Wilson. Which is interesting because Rodgers seemed like he couldn’t stand Wilson last year. Also, where’s Darnell Washington? And Will Howard? No invites? Did they decline? Hmmm. pic.twitter.com/pbYeuju3JE

However, after taking a closer look at what Howard was doing around the same time, there appears to be another explanation.
Howard posted on his Instagram showing that he was attending a family wedding during the same timeframe as Rodgers’ retreat. Based on the timing of the post, it looks like Howard may have simply had a prior commitment that kept him from joining his teammates.

Obviously, this doesn’t completely confirm what happened behind the scenes. Nobody outside of Rodgers, Howard, and the other players involved knows whether an invitation was extended or not. However, it does add important context to a situation that was starting to create unnecessary speculation. Instead of Howard being left out, it is very possible that he just had somewhere else he needed to be.
Steelers' Recent QB Discourse Makes No Sense For Howard Not To Be Invited
When you look at Rodgers’ history of comments about Howard, the idea that there was some type of issue doesn’t really make much sense. Since arriving in Pittsburgh, Rodgers has been extremely supportive of Howard. He has talked about wanting to help him develop, mentor him, and pass along knowledge from his years in the league.
Rodgers has also consistently spoken highly of Howard, making it clear that he believes in what the young quarterback can become. So while fans naturally noticed Howard’s absence from the photos, the situation may not be nearly as complicated as some people made it seem.

At the end of the day, Howard missing the “Last Rodeo” could have had nothing to do with football and everything to do with a family obligation. Sometimes a missing name on a guest list creates a bigger story than what actually happened. It's important to note that rookie QB Drew Allar was also not present.
