Steelers Could Be 1 Of 5 Teams Checking In On Free Agent Stefon Diggs

The Pittsburgh Steelers are always looking for ways to improve their team, no matter what time of the year it is. With training camp on the horizon, they most likely have a handful of different veterans and depth options ready to call in case something unfortunate happens before the regular season gets underway. There's always a player or two that gets signed during that time that Pittsburgh expects to contribute in some way, and not just as a practice squad guy. This situation is nothing new to the organization.

In a recent episode of NFL Live, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler mentioned that there were "at least five teams" showing interest in veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, although he likely wouldn't be signed until training camp.

Fowler did not outright name the Steelers as a team that has shown interest, but there is plenty of reason to believe that they have at least checked in on Diggs and asked his agent about the possibility of him coming to Pittsburgh. If the money is right, General Manager Omar Khan could be working with the veteran wide receiver to get him ready to wear black and gold in 2026.

For starters, there were the stats that Fowler mentioned. Getting 1,000 yards in a season at age 32 is impressive, but doing so on just 55% of the snaps is something else. Diggs was on the field for just over half of the time with the offense and he still found a way to make an impact. There's no question that the Steelers' wide receiver room is questionable at best, so getting a proven commodity like him could raise the floor and the ceiling.

At this time of the year, there usually aren't any blockbuster free agent signings being made. There might be a slight escalation in pay from what the Steelers hope due to other teams trying to sign him, but it wouldn't escalate to a full-on bidding war. Khan can easily find a way to free up enough money to bring the veteran receiver in. If he can sign Diggs for less than $10 million, odds are he will try to make it happen.

Steelers Have One Massive Reason To Want Diggs

Diggs would be a massive piece to Aaron Rodgers' final ride. It's become well-known in recent years that the 42-year-old has a strong disdain towards young wide receivers who aren't where they need to be on the field. He has a very particular way of doing things, while these young players on their rookie contracts are normally just too focused on getting acclimated to the NFL to put all their time and effort into making sure they do everything Rodgers' way.

As of now, the battle for the WR3 job is between much-maligned receiver Roman Wilson and rookie Germie Bernard. Rodgers' issues with Wilson in 2025 have been well-documented, so odds are that it might be difficult for him to win the spot out the gate. At the same time, the Steelers don't seem interested in throwing Bernard into the fire unless he shows that he's ready without a doubt.

In 2025, the Steelers signed a pair of veterans to appease Rodgers, since he was not developing enough chemistry with his receivers already on the roster. What's to say that an issue like that won't happen again? Diggs can come in and put all of his effort into doing things the way that the 42-year-old wants and develop enough of a relationship to where he can be a key contributor throughout the season.
