The Pittsburgh Steelers have been experiencing similar campaigns for almost a decade: winning seasons with no playoff wins. Some seasons have looked different, with the team winning its division and earning a top-four seed, but the results have ultimately been the same. Former head coach Mike Tomlin took much of the blame with many fans believing his message was running stale, and he resigned after the 2025 season. With new leadership in place, the 2026 season will be a true test of whether Tomlin was the primary issue, or the team's saving grace.

The organization decided to hire Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy as the next head coach. McCarthy will be a new shift in philosophy, being an offensive-minded head coach. With the organization still looking to win now, they decided to bring back future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers for one final season as well. Rodgers is certainly not the player he once was, but he showed flashes of his vintage days in 2025, and with his new and improved weaponry, he may be able to turn back the clock.
Rodgers and the offense should be much improved, but the defense remains a question mark. Omar Khan made some big signings to the unit, bringing in Jamel Dean, Jaquan Brisker, and Sebastian Joseph-Day, but how will they mesh? The secondary should be better in 2026 overall, and Joseph-Day will bring much-needed help to the run defense, which has struggled the last few seasons.
Even with their improvements, some in the media members are still not convinced the Steelers are any better than before. Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver TJ Houshmandzadeh recently appeared on an episode of the show Speakeasy, where he believes the team is still in the 9-10 win range. With improvements by other teams in the AFC North, Houshmandzadeh doesn't believe the Steelers are up to par with the rest of the division.
"But when you're in a division with the Bengals, who I believe improved, with the Ravens, who I believed improved with just defense, the Steelers will kind of be what they've always been, 9-8, 10-7-type of team," Houshmandzadeh explained. "I can see that. So will they be better? They may be a game better, but I don't expect them to get into the playoffs and cause any problems."
The Bengals have made arguably the biggest improvement on defense, adding superstar defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence. They also went and added Bryan Cook, Boye Mafe, and Jonathan Allen, giving them a very respectable front seven. The Baltimore Ravens, on the other hand, weren't as loud in free agency, but still added Trey Hendrickson and Jaylinn Hawkins, giving them much-needed pass rush and coverage help.

Outside of the offensive skill positions and some offensive line shuffling, the Steelers' roster will be mostly the same. The biggest improvement was certainly the wide receiver room, which added Michael Pittman Jr. and Germie Bernard, giving Rodgers some more talent to work with. The offense will be under a whole new scheme, and with a respectable wide receiver core, they may be able to leap in the conference standings.
Steelers' Defense Will Be The Key To A Successful Season
The defensive roster may be mostly the same this season, but they have a new coordinator in Patrick Graham. For too long, the defense ran a very seemingly outdated scheme. With Graham, things should change. Many fans within Steeler Nation have often blamed the previous coaching staff for the defense's shortcomings in recent seasons. 2026 will be a true test of their potential as a group.

Fans will have to see whether Houshmandzadeh's prediction is correct or not. The new coaching staff brings excitement and fresh ideas, but the roster's staleness may still persist.
