The Pittsburgh Steelers have kicked off training camp, with Monday, August 4th, being the first day in full pads. The team has been working through walkthroughs and some individual drills before ramping up the intensity to start week two. The front office's offseason additions have been players to pay attention to all camp, whether that be free agent signings or rookies. Fans have had plenty of players to watch and see how they acclimate to a new environment. One of the headliners from the team's free agent acquisitions is cornerback Jamel Dean.

Dean was a high-profile player who was available at a position of need for Pittsburgh. The Steelers signed the veteran to a three-year, $36.75 million contract in March, and his play has been highly anticipated throughout camp. Dean had been an underrated shutdown corner for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over the past seven seasons, and is looking to keep that going in the Steel City. He had a really nice year in 2025 with three interceptions and nine pass deflections.
Dean has gotten work in training camp against his teammates, like wide receivers DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., and Roman Wilson. However, things have looked bleak for the new addition so far. He's yet to make any huge splash plays and has given up some chunk plays and touchdowns, despite being looked at as the ever-so-important CB2 of the defense. Dean was brought in to provide another lockdown corner beside rising star Joey Porter Jr. SteelerNation's Brandon Wallace is live from training camp and provided an update on Dean's performance, which wasn't a positive one.

The touchdown given up to Wilson, Dean was in coverage, on top of the Metcalf touchdown. Dean has to make these plays in camp so they can translate in the regular season, but it seems he's being exposed early. He's been one of the best coverage corners in the league throughout his tenure, and Pittsburgh needed another corner to rely on besides Porter. This lack of cornerback depth has plagued the Steelers over the past few seasons, and they're looking to avoid that with Dean.

Dean has to be another shutdown corner for the Black and Gold. It's what he was brought in to do, and with Porter on the PUP list, his play is even more important. Porter has been a rock for the Steelers and has taken opposing teams' number one receivers out of games. But often, the defense has allowed other receivers to get hot. This stems from an absence of a number two CB who can do the same.
Pittsburgh's defense was nowhere near as dominant as it could have been with all the talent it possessed on that side of the ball — not to mention the recent investments. To get back to being a top unit, the secondary will be tested, and Dean's play will be crucial.
The Steelers Need Their Secondary To Be As Good As Ever
Porter is dealing with a lingering injury as his extension talks heighten. One of the big storylines of the offseason was whether the front office could get a deal done with him, but things have slowed. If, for any reason, Porter is held out of play for the regular season, whether that be for injury or contract disputes, Pittsburgh has to rely on the secondary they've worked to build up.
In a league that has been so pass-heavy in recent years, the secondary has only become even more vital. Along with Dean and Porter, the Steelers have players like Brandin Echols and Asante Samuel Jr., who will be important depth pieces. A no-fly zone could be imminent, but that's only if the corners play at their best.
