The Pittsburgh Steelers have been forced to wait patiently for encouraging news regarding Jalen Ramsey. The veteran defensive back suffered a knee injury during mandatory minicamp, which landed him on the Physically Unable to Perform list and immediately created uncertainty surrounding his availability.

There was already some concern when Ramsey first went down, but Steelers insider Mark Kaboly added another layer to the situation. Kaboly previously suggested that he had seen certain looks and reactions around the organization before, implying that Ramsey's injury could be more alarming than Pittsburgh initially let on.
That naturally caused Steeler Nation to wonder whether Ramsey might be dealing with something more serious. He is 31 years old and plays a physically demanding style of football, so an extended absence would have created a major problem for new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
The latest development, however, finally provides some relief. Kaboly spotted Ramsey working on the field alongside Joey Porter Jr. and acknowledged the significance of seeing the veteran making progress.
"Porter and Ramsey doing some field work," Kaboly said. "Good news, at least for Ramsey."
That is a short update, but every word matters after Kaboly helped intensify the concern surrounding Ramsey's condition. His own description of the development as "good news" now pushes the conversation in a completely different direction.
Ramsey performing field work does not guarantee that he is ready to return to full practice. It does, however, indicate that his rehabilitation is moving forward and that the situation may not be as threatening as many Steelers fans had feared.
That is enormous for a Pittsburgh defense expecting Ramsey to remain one of its most important and versatile pieces. He performed well during his first season with the Steelers in 2025, and Graham should have even more creative ways to deploy him in 2026.
Ramsey can line up virtually anywhere in the secondary. He can play outside, move into the slot, operate closer to the line of scrimmage, and even sneak toward the quarterback to create pressure. That flexibility allows Graham to disguise his intentions and force opposing quarterbacks to process additional information before the snap.
The Steelers have plenty of talented defenders, but they do not have another player who can replicate everything Ramsey provides. His presence gives Graham the freedom to build different coverage packages without constantly changing personnel.
That becomes even more exciting when imagining Ramsey and Porter returning at full strength. Porter gives Pittsburgh a physical outside cornerback capable of matching up with top receivers, while Ramsey can move around the formation and attack whichever weakness Graham identifies.
Steelers Still Have Some Mystery Surrounding Porter
There is still some mystery surrounding Porter. It remains unclear whether his limited activity is completely related to injury recovery or if his unresolved contract situation is also influencing the process. The "at least for Ramsey" portion of Kaboly's update leaves that question hanging over the organization.
For now, the Ramsey development deserves to be viewed as a major positive. Ramsey also has an opportunity to shock people who believe age will finally catch up with him. The bold prediction is that he will produce an All-Pro-caliber season at 31 years old. His intelligence, versatility, and physical style should make him an ideal weapon for Graham.

Pittsburgh is not completely out of the woods until Ramsey participates fully, but seeing him perform field work is an important step. Kaboly helped raise the original concern, and now his own update has delivered the relief fans desperately needed.
Graham has an impressive collection of tools at his disposal. The only question is when Ramsey and Porter will both return at full strength and allow the Steelers to reveal just how dangerous this secondary can become. For now, this update is good news for the Steelers.
