The Pittsburgh Steelers finally received an encouraging visual amid their exhausting contract standoff with Joey Porter Jr. The cornerback practiced in pads as the team continued preparing for its regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. That does not guarantee a new agreement, but it suggests Porter is preparing himself to play.

His participation arrives after he left open the possibility of missing games without an extension. Mike McCarthy previously called negotiations an impasse. The stakes now stretch beyond the contract itself. The uncertainty has transformed a financial disagreement into a football problem for a new coaching staff.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Vince Williams lived through an even uglier contract battle when Le'Veon Bell sat out the entire 2018 season. Speaking on SNR Drive, Williams issued a personal plea to Porter before the cornerback makes a choice he may eventually regret.
"I'm just happy to see him back, man. I just hope he stays," Williams said. "I don't want him to pull a Le'Veon Bell situation. I got to live through that, and I hope he doesn't do it, man. I was right there. It doesn't work, Joey. Please, just play. Don't hold in. Just play, brother."
Williams watched Bell's holdout consume a team that entered 2018 with championship expectations. Bell pursued the contract he believed he deserved, but his absence lasted the entire season and ended his career in Pittsburgh. Porter's circumstances are different. Bell had already established himself as one of football's premier offensive weapons and played consecutive seasons under the franchise tag. Porter remains under his rookie contract and has not yet assembled the individual honors or sustained production that Bell possessed when his relationship with the organization collapsed.

That does not mean Porter should accept any offer. Starting cornerbacks with his size, age and man-coverage ability are difficult to find. Allowing negotiations to fail over a manageable gap would create another expensive problem. The Steelers must recognize what they are asking Porter to risk. Playing without long-term security exposes him to injury. General Manager Omar Khan has already invested in fellow 2023 draft selections Nick Herbig, Darnell Washington and Keeanu Benton, making the resistance with Porter difficult to ignore.
Porter also must recognize the difference between potential and a fully established career. His first three seasons produced 31 passes defensed and three interceptions across 47 appearances, including 41 starts. Those numbers demonstrate legitimate value, but they do not automatically justify resetting a cornerback market now led by significantly more decorated players.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ray Fittipaldo confirmed on 93.7 The Fan that Porter participated in Thursday's padded practice. He interpreted it as goodwill and an indication the defender is working toward playing against Atlanta.
That matters because Porter could have continued limiting his involvement. Instead, he placed himself into a more physical practice environment while negotiations remained unresolved. The action does not erase his ambiguous comments about Week 1, but it carries more weight than another carefully worded answer behind a microphone.
Steelers And Porter Must Stop Defending Every Inch
The most sensible agreement will require both sides to surrender something. Pittsburgh must stop treating its current valuation as sacred and increase the commitment enough to reflect Porter's importance at a premium position. Porter must move away from any demand that prices him as a finished superstar instead of an ascending cornerback with imperfections still attached to his game.
Williams knows how quickly a contract disagreement can swallow a season and fracture a relationship. Porter practicing in pads offers hope that history will not repeat itself. The next move belongs at the negotiating table, where Pittsburgh should raise its offer and Porter should lower his demand enough to close a gap that benefits nobody.
