TJ Watt's Incredible Heroics Leave Aaron Rodgers In Awe After Steelers Win

The Pittsburgh Steelers needed a game-changing moment during their 2026 season opener, and TJ Watt provided one that Aaron Rodgers could hardly believe. Watt intercepted a screen pass from Atlanta Falcons quarterback Cooper Rush, went to the ground and then raced into the end zone. The play gave Pittsburgh a 20-10 fourth-quarter lead in its 20-13 victory.

Watt had already wrecked Atlanta's plans before delivering the first pick-six of his NFL career. He finished with two sacks, three tackles for loss and the decisive interception, consistently creating problems for Rush and the Falcons' protection. Rodgers revealed afterward that Pittsburgh's offense had been discussing Watt's performance seconds before he changed the game again.

There was even some initial confusion on the Steelers' sideline because Watt fell while securing the interception and then got back up. Rodgers initially believed Atlanta had touched Watt down and Pittsburgh's defenders were simply leaving the field. Once he realized the play had continued into the end zone, the quarterback could only marvel at Watt's awareness and instincts.

"Unbelievable," Rodgers said. "We were just talking about, literally seconds before, how great of a game he was having and what an impact he's had. We were laughing about something that happened in practice this week involving him, and then that happens. Then he falls down and gets up, and I'm thinking they're just running off because he got tagged off. I didn't realize he even scored. What an incredible, incredible play."

Watt's ability to locate the football around the line of scrimmage was not new to Rodgers. Pittsburgh's veteran quarterback has watched him disrupt practices for months, and that preparation translated immediately when the regular season arrived. Watt recognized the screen, got himself into the throwing lane and supplied the touchdown Pittsburgh's offense had struggled to produce during the second half.

"How do you even think about that? He's done that a few times too. He gets that hand on that football over the last couple of years," Rodgers explained. "He has an uncanny ability to get his hands there, and so does Cam Heyward."

Heyward demonstrated that same skill by batting down three passes against Atlanta. His work inside, combined with Watt and Alex Highsmith attacking from the edges, made Rush uncomfortable throughout the afternoon. Highsmith added two sacks, giving the Steelers four as a team and allowing Patrick Graham's defense to control the game without Joey Porter Jr. in the lineup.

Rodgers also praised Watt for an impact that went beyond his production. The quarterback has seen a different level of leadership from the star defender throughout training camp, culminating in an emotional message to teammates before the Steelers began their season. That part of Watt's growth clearly resonated with one of the most experienced players in the locker room.

"TJ has just been on a different level this year," Rodgers noted. "Throughout the entire training camp, I have seen his leadership be at an all-time high. He gave a great and passionate speech, and for anybody who hasn't seen it before, you can't help but get inspired. What a game."

Steelers Saw TJ Watt Set The Standard That Aaron Rodgers Described

Watt's performance provided the clearest possible example of the leadership Rodgers praised. Pittsburgh's offense converted only three of its 13 third-down opportunities and managed 58 rushing yards, forcing the defense to protect a narrow lead. Watt responded by directly putting seven points on the scoreboard rather than waiting for somebody else to solve the problem.

The defense needed that response because Bijan Robinson still produced 173 yards from scrimmage and caught Atlanta's only touchdown. Rodgers acknowledged that Robinson made his share of plays, but Graham's unit ultimately completed its assignment. The Steelers intercepted Rush twice, with Jaquan Brisker producing the other takeaway, and repeatedly forced Atlanta to settle for field-goal attempts.

Rodgers and Watt arrived at this stage of their careers through different paths, but both understand how quickly a team's standard is established. Watt did more than dominate statistically in McCarthy's first regular-season game. He delivered the exact type of performance that makes a pregame speech mean something after kickoff.
