The Pittsburgh Steelers have their work cut out for them ahead of their matchup in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts. There is much that needs to be corrected, and that starts for new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and his group. In their Week 4 matchup, it was the second straight game allowing nearly 30 points in a game. They were playing very well the first two weeks of the 2026 NFL season, but that momentum has evaporated. However, the defensive coordinator did have a glowing vote of confidence for one player in his group. That defender is also playing in his rookie season with the franchise.

Rookie safety Robert Spears-Jennings was one of the few bright spots defensively in the loss last Thursday against the Cleveland Browns on the road. Graham spoke highly of him this offseason because of how much he liked what he was seeing, especially during training camp. Now the Oklahoma Sooners standout is starting to make a positive impact in real games for 2026.
On Monday, Head Coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media during his weekly press conference and his coordinators followed. During the media scrum, Graham had more high praise for his rookie safety after his interception against Cleveland Thursday. He made sure to give the credit where it was due following that performance on Thursday.
βI told you before [Robert Spears-Jennings] was coming," Graham said. βYou look at him, the traits. Physically first and foremost, the size, the speed, the athleticism. He plays to it. Then you go in terms of the intellect, in terms of football sponge. Heβs learning football Iβm saying at a good rate. Iβm looking forward to seeing him grow as a player. I wasnβt surprised.β
Spears-Jennings' play is very encouraging given that the organization is still waiting on the return of safety DeShon Elliott. For a secondary that is now without Joey Porter Jr. because of a trade and cornerback Jamel Dean due to injury, they need players to step up and answer the call on that side of the football. Graham also has the type of confidence in his rookie safety that is great to see, specifically for the growth and development of him as a player.
As he continues to perform, with a secondary that is starting to get thin, the Black and Gold coordinator will look to call his name more frequently as the season unfolds. When the Steelers drafted him in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, it was uncertain as to the type of impact he would have. However, following his strong training camp and now making a positive impact in games, he is making a huge case for himself to be a great value pick that sees an uptick in snaps.
Steelers' Secondary Is At A Huge Crossroads Early On This Season
The coming weeks are going to tell a lot about how Graham's group responds to adversity given the guys they are now missing in the secondary. This makes this a major crossroads for that positional group, as they look to step up for their defensive coordinator. The franchise recently signed cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting to the 53-man roster from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. That move shows that they know exactly how thin they are getting in the secondary early on in this 2026 NFL season.

Spears-Jennings now has the opportunity to become an integral part of the Steelers' defense very early on in his NFL career. To go with his lone interception on the year last Thursday in Cleveland, he has two passes defended as well as 15 tackles in four games this year thus far. In those four games, he has not started a game to this point. Given the trust instilled in him by his defensive coordinator, it sounds like business is getting ready to pick up for Spears-Jennings with how much he is absorbing the game of football at this level.
