The Pittsburgh Steelers' offense is beginning to click, as the team is riding a four-game win streak. The ground game has been elite behind running backs Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle. The offensive line has earned a top-three ranking across the NFL and has been key to the offense's success. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still slinging the rock at age 42 and helping propel the team to wins. The pass-catching group has been shaky, mostly due to the injuries sustained by Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson, but No. 1 wide receiver DK Metcalf has struggled immensely.

Steelers' DK Metcalf drops a pass during a win over the Atlanta Falcons to open up the 2026 season at home.
The Steelers acquired Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks in March of 2025, giving up second- and seventh-round draft picks in exchange for Metcalf and a sixth-round pick. At the time, Metcalf was predicted to slot in very well next to star wide receiver George Pickens. This did not last long, as Pittsburgh shipped Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys a few weeks later. Metcalf was brought in to be the alpha wide receiver in the Steelers' offense that could do it all, and while he had some solid outings in 2025, he has truly struggled in 2026.
Metcalf's biggest issue has been dropped passes, as he seemingly drops an easy pass every week. During the Steelers' dominant Week 8 victory over the Cleveland Browns, Metcalf was held to just one catch for 4 yards and dropped a wide-open downfield pass that resulted in a wild interception. While Metcalf's issues have not harmed the team enough to turn wins into losses, he has produced very little. Another big issue is the massive contract extension that the Steelers gave Metcalf after trading for him. He has not lived up to the paycheck at all, and the money he is earning could have been used elsewhere.
Metcalf is extremely talented and athletically gifted, but he has not been able to showcase his skills in Pittsburgh very often. He racked up 418 receptions for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns across 97 games with the Seahawks, but turned in the worst statistical season in his career during his first year in Pittsburgh. His 2026 season looks like it is going to end up being even worse, as he cannot seem to consistently make an impact on the offense.
During a recent episode of Kaboly + Mack Live, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly spoke about Metcalf's issues and how confusing it is to see him underperforming.
"DK is just too talented to be playing this way," Kaboly said. "I see him on the jugs machine all the time. I really do not know what the problem is. The drops are worse than anything else, you really just have to make those plays. You have to question if he is ever going to figure it out."
As Kaboly pointed out, it is really hard to put a finger on why Metcalf has performed so poorly. He has all the attributes of an elite wide receiver and has the resume from Seattle to prove he can play at the highest level.

Pittsburgh is stuck with Metcalf because he is under a huge contract, and no team would likely be willing to take it on, especially given his recent play. If Metcalf cannot figure it out soon, the Steelers could be in trouble later in the season when they need their most expensive playmaker to step up in crucial situations.
Steelers' DK Metcalf Has Kept His Head Down Despite Struggles
One positive in the entire situation with Metcalf is that his fiery, angry demeanor has not been on display in 2026. Metcalf has racked up plenty of personal fouls in his career, along with many scuffles that have contributed to his poor reputation. In 2025, Metcalf also got into an altercation with a fan that led to him being suspended for multiple games. While he has struggled in 2026, he has not been getting into any trouble. He has also been relatively quiet when speaking with the media, usually discussing his game and what he needs to improve. Hopefully, Metcalf can return to his true self by the time the postseason rolls around, as Pittsburgh will need its top weapon to be mentally focused.
