Steelers Fans Get Called Out For Not Being Thankful Enough Regarding Roman Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base waited patiently for Roman Wilson to get his moment. When he finally did in 2026, all was well until an injury once again set him back. Now, Steeler Nation is being hit with the harsh reality of not being thankful enough for Wilson's production before the injury. Sometimes, it takes losing a player to understand exactly what he was bringing to the table.

Wilson entered the 2026 season with plenty to prove after a frustrating beginning to his NFL career. The former Michigan standout had the talent to become a legitimate weapon, but injuries prevented him from establishing himself early. With Mike McCarthy taking over as head coach and Aaron Rodgers leading the offense, Wilson finally had an opportunity to demonstrate his value. Unfortunately, that opportunity was interrupted just as things were getting interesting.

The Steelers are 6-2 entering their bye week, but their passing attack remains a legitimate concern despite the impressive record. Pittsburgh has received important contributions from its running backs and tight ends, while questions continue to surround the wide receiver position. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly recently examined the roster in a midseason assessment for The Pat McAfee Show. His evaluation of Wilson should make Pittsburgh fans reconsider how they viewed the young receiver before his injury.

"Wilson's worth wasn't realized until he broke his finger and missed the last three games," Kaboly wrote.

That is a fascinating assessment because Wilson wasn't exactly putting up superstar numbers before getting hurt. Nobody was discussing him as an All-Pro candidate or suggesting he had become Pittsburgh's most dangerous offensive weapon. However, he was providing something that this Steelers offense has struggled to replace. His ability to create explosive plays gave Rodgers another option capable of changing the complexion of a possession.

There is an important difference between a receiver who catches passes and one who actually threatens a defense. Pittsburgh has several players capable of contributing underneath. However, the offense also needs receivers who can stretch the field and make defenders uncomfortable. Wilson was beginning to demonstrate that ability before his finger injury.

Kaboly went even further in explaining why Wilson's absence has become noticeable. His production might not immediately jump off the page, but one particular statistic tells a much more interesting story about his importance.

"Until then, he provided much-needed splash to this offense that has been sorely missed. He has 14 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns in five games, but his 13.4 yards per reception is still the highest on the team," Kaboly wrote.

That final statistic deserves all of the attention. Wilson wasn't necessarily receiving the same opportunities as Pittsburgh's established offensive weapons, yet he was making meaningful contributions when Rodgers found him. Averaging 13.4 yards per reception illustrates why his absence matters beyond the number of catches he accumulated.

Steelers Must Recognize Roman Wilson's Value When He Returns

The biggest takeaway from Kaboly's evaluation isn't that Steelers fans intentionally overlooked Wilson. It's that his importance became easier to recognize once he wasn't available. That happens frequently in football, especially when a player contributes through efficiency rather than overwhelming volume.

Wilson's injury also creates an interesting challenge for McCarthy. Pittsburgh has continued winning games without him, but winning doesn't mean every offensive problem has been solved. The Steelers must determine how to create more explosive opportunities as their schedule becomes increasingly important.

When Wilson returns, the organization shouldn't treat him as an afterthought simply because other receivers have bigger contracts or more established reputations. He earned an opportunity to contribute before getting hurt. His production suggests he deserves another meaningful chance once healthy.
