Steelers Trading For Josh Downs Hits Massive Aaron Rodgers Roadblock

The Pittsburgh Steelers have given fans plenty of reasons to believe that a productive second half of the season could lead to something special. That has put extra attention on the front office as the trade deadline approaches. General Manager Omar Khan has an opportunity to help a team that entered its bye week with a 6-2 record. However, adding a recognizable name doesn't necessarily mean that the newcomer will immediately become a difference-maker. One potential target comes with a complication that deserves more discussion.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs has become a popular name to discuss when looking at Pittsburgh's options. The Steelers could use another dependable pass-catcher, and the young wideout would give the offense someone who could help beyond the current campaign. There is a reasonable argument for pursuing him, especially if Khan can agree to a manageable price.

However, the conversation cannot ignore Roman Wilson. His injury has created uncertainty, but getting him healthy would give quarterback Aaron Rodgers someone he already knows. That relationship could make a potential trade much less impactful than fans anticipate.

During a recent fan chat for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, insider Ray Fittipaldo addressed how Downs would fit into Pittsburgh's offense. The beat writer pointed to the adjustment period that would come with acquiring the receiver, while also explaining why Wilson's return would complicate the situation.

"That's the misconception about acquiring Downs. He has no history with Rodgers. He's here for nine games. It's going to take time. He'd be insurance," Fittipaldo wrote. "If Wilson comes back healthy, he goes back to his old role because he earned the trust of the QB."

That is a pretty significant detail when discussing what the Steelers should surrender in a deal. Fans envisioning Downs immediately becoming one of Rodgers' favorite targets might need to lower their expectations. Learning an offense is only part of the process. Understanding what the veteran quarterback expects on a particular route can take longer than anyone would prefer.

Rodgers has spent months working with the receivers who were already in Pittsburgh. Downs would arrive while the Steelers are trying to win games and protect their position in the AFC North. There would be practice opportunities, but the coaching staff would also have to prepare for a different opponent each week. That leaves limited time to build the connection that Wilson has already established.

This doesn't mean that Downs couldn't help the offense. Injuries can quickly change a team's plans, and having another capable receiver would give Head Coach Mike McCarthy more options. However, Fittipaldo's assessment suggests that the immediate role could look much different than the one supporters have in mind.

The asking price becomes especially important under those circumstances. Pittsburgh would have to weigh the value of additional depth against the draft capital necessary to complete a trade. Giving up a pick for someone who might play a secondary role would invite questions if another position needed help down the stretch.

There is also a longer-term argument for acquiring Downs. His potential value wouldn't disappear simply because Wilson returned to the lineup. Khan would need to consider how both receivers fit into the offense moving forward. That could lead to a big 2027 offseason decision. However, that is a different discussion from expecting a deadline addition to transform Pittsburgh's passing attack immediately.

For a team trying to take advantage of its current record, the short-term fit matters. The Steelers cannot assume that a player's production elsewhere will follow him into a new offense without an adjustment.

Steelers Must Consider Wilson Before Making A Significant Trade

Wilson's health should have a major influence on Pittsburgh's approach. If the coaching staff expects him to return and handle his previous responsibilities, Khan needs to know exactly what Downs would add before agreeing to a deal. Rodgers' confidence in Wilson carries weight, particularly during the second half of a season with postseason expectations.

Downs could provide valuable depth and future upside if he were to re-sign, but those benefits must match the price. Fittipaldo's comments are a reminder that acquiring a receiver and finding him a meaningful role are two separate challenges. Pittsburgh would have to solve both to make the move worthwhile.
