Steelers former QB1 Ben Roethlisberger Voiced Excitement to Maybe Sneak Over to Training Camp to Visit Old Teammates

The Pittsburgh Steelers got training camp underway earlier this past week, and if you haven’t heard by now, the team is transitioning into a “new era.” The Steelers are entering their first training camp in 18 years without former QB1 and future first-ballot Hall of Famer, Ben Roethlisberger

Roethlisberger doesn’t have to worry about training camp this time of year, but he’s staying busy, that’s for sure.

In an article published by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last Friday, Roethlisberger spoke with Ron Cook the prior Wednesday about many topics including what he’s up to now.

“These days, I’m doing a lot of driving,”Roethlisberger said. “I’m a cab driver, an Uber driver, whatever you want to call it. It’s not a good time to have high gas prices.”

Roethlisberger is enjoying his dad duties though, this is what retirement is for. We all look forward to being able to retire to spend more time with those we love.

“There’s something about teaching them or doing it with them or just watching them do it that makes it so much neater, more special,” Roethlisberger stated Wednesday morning. “A lot of times now, I forget that I even played. I’m having so much fun with them.”

On Friday, Roethlisberger put his arm to use again by throwing out the first pitch at the Pittsburgh Pirates “Yinzerpalooza” night at PNC Park.

Roethlisberger was talking in the 3rd inning when TV reporter for AT&T Sportsnet PittsburghDan Potash came over to talk about what it means to him to be a part of something like this.

“It’s special because this is home,” Roethlisberger stated in the interview. We’re a family of yinzers, so it’s great to be here. What an environment. I mean, what a beautiful park. We all know that the fans are out here playing the cross state rivals, so it’s great.”

Roethlisberger was asked about his feelings before he threw out the first pitch and if Pirates’ pitchers were giving him some advice.

“Yes. They said, ‘Don’t skip it and don’t airmail it,” Roethlisberger stated the advice the Pirates’ pitch staff relayed to him. “I said, ‘okay, thanks.’ I wasn’t nervous until the anthem, and then the anthem happens, and I just felt like these instant butterflies and jitters. And I got out to the mound, and it looked a lot further than I was expecting and what I was practicing for. But luckily I took a little something off, but I threw a strike, so that’s all that matters.”

Potash asked Roethlisberger if he’s getting the “itch” now that the Steelers have opened training camp.

“Any itch that I have, I’m scratching by texting Pat Freiermuth right now, seeing how he’s doing and everything,” Roethlisberger answered. “So, you know what, I’m enjoying this. Being here with my family. I wish those guys nothing but the best. I’m excited for them. I hear things are going well over there. So excited to maybe sneak over there one day and catch them in practice. But as for being out there, I’m good.”

I’m sure his old Steelers teammates would love a surprise visit from their former QB1. Roethlisberger is content with being retired, so I don’t think he’ll be pulling a Tom Brady anytime soon. He will stay retired and enjoy moments like this with family and friends.
