The Pittsburgh Steelers 2025 offseason has already been filled with wild rumors, but one in particular set the internet ablaze. According to a report from Ryan Burr, the Steelers allegedly reached out to the Jacksonville Jaguars to explore a trade for quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Burr claimed that Pittsburgh was willing to part with their first- and second-round picks for this year, but he also pointed out that, with the 2025 NFL Draft set to take place in Pittsburgh, next year’s first-round pick was unlikely to be included in the deal.

The rumor sent Steelers fans into a frenzy on social media, but it was quickly shot down by multiple insiders, who confirmed there was absolutely no truth to the story. The Steelers, it turns out, never even made contact with the Jaguars about Lawrence. Many fans breathed a sigh of relief, as Lawrence didn't look very good during the 2024 season.

However, there were some fans who actually supported the idea of the Steelers aggressively pursuing their future franchise quarterback. On Monday morning, Steelers fans finally heard from Lawrence himself. During an appearance on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, Lawrence clarified the situation, explaining that it was essentially impossible for him to even be traded in the first place.

"I wouldn't say your heart drops, but you're kind of like, what? Like, I'm thinking, 'Well, I can't even get traded, I have no trade clause in my contract.' So like, I would know about it if I was getting traded or if that was something that was gonna happen," Lawrence said. "I'd have to be on board with it, which I'm not. I'm happy here in Jacksonville. We wanna win a Super Bowl here, and I think we can do that. I don't wanna leave Jacksonville, so I'm happy here, obviously. I'm not going to Pittsburgh."

Lawrence’s comments on the trade rumor highlight just how quickly these stories can spiral. Burr was adamant in his reporting, claiming the information came directly from within the Jaguars organization.

How or why he came to believe that remains unclear, but it’s pretty wild to learn that the rumor had absolutely no basis in reality.

"Liam texted me actually, I guess the day after it came out and Liam said, 'I shouldn't even have to say this, but that's not coming from us.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I figured.' So, we're all good," Lawrence said. "He didn't even have to send that. There was no doubt on my side."

Newly hired Head Coach Liam Coen took the initiative to reach out to his quarterback and ensure he felt comfortable, dispelling any concerns. The idea that the Steelers were pursuing Lawrence, or that the Jaguars were even considering moving him, never made much sense. Now, it’s clear that the rumors had no truth behind them.

Steelers' Quarterback Situation Likely To Spark More Rumors

The Steelers' quarterback situation is bound to spark more rumors as fans anxiously await news on who will start in 2025. Both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields have expressed interest in returning to Pittsburgh, but only one is expected to return to the roster. The direction the Steelers take at quarterback will be intriguing to watch. One thing is certain, though—it won’t be Lawrence.

Debates have been heating up ever since the Steelers brought in Wilson and Fields ahead of the 2024 season. Fans may soon gain more clarity on the team’s direction at quarterback. Many are hopeful the Steelers will sign Fields, citing his lower cost, exciting upside, and much younger age as key factors in favor of him.
