It feels like the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback situation is all the talk heading into the NFL Combine and free agency period. They only have one quarterback signed to the roster at the moment in Skylar Thompson, who is definitely not the answer the organization has been searching for. It would seem that all signs are pointing to one of the Steelers' former starting quarterbacks from this past season to lead the offense in 2025. General Manager Omar Khan has made it his top priority finding the right fit for a lead signal-caller before filling out the rest of the roster. It seems like a decision could be coming sooner rather than later, but for Steeler Nation, they might not like the answer that the team comes up with.

Steelers' Justin Fields and Russell Wilson leading the team out of the tunnel.
Prominent NFL insider Adam Schefter sat down with the Pardon My Take podcast and was asked about who he believed was going to be the Steelers' quarterback next season. Schefter believes it's going to be either Justin Fields or Russell Wilson, but if he had to choose one of them -- it's Wilson.
"Steelers' next quarterback?," Schefter repeated. "Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. One of them will be back, [the] one of them I expect to be back, Russell Wilson."
Many fans will be very upset with Schefter's comments as Wilson left a sour taste in their mouth with his performance in the last five weeks of the 2024 season. Wilson had a hot start to his tenure in Pittsburgh, moving the ball effectively through the air. Unfortunately, once the Steelers' faced true Super Bowl caliber teams, Wilson couldn't do much and the scores showed it.
Wilson finished the season with a 6-5 regular season record, passing for 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. Wilson would lose five straight games to end the season, including an embarrassing loss against the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round. With Wilson turning 37 next season, some would feel it's time to look somewhere else for their franchise guy.

Steelers' Russell Wilson throws a pass against the Baltimore Ravens during Week 11 of the 2024 regular season
Wilson took 33 sacks in the regular season, showing his mobility isn't what it used to be. Many fans look at the success the Washington Commanders had with Jayden Daniels and are wanting Mike Tomlin to try to replicate that with Fields, especially with his running ability. If the Steelers are truly going to run it back with Wilson, then the priority of adding quality weapons will be at an all time high.
Steelers fans have been glued to the quarterback rumors since the season ended. With talks about the Steelers' interest in trading for Matthew Stafford, going after Aaron Rodgers, or even having interest in Daniel Jones, it's become an endless cycle. Khan wants to make the right decision, but if Wilson is the answer, Pittsburgh could be asking for a similar result to the season as the seasons before.

Steelers Likely Feel That They Can Find Postseason Success With Russell Wilson
Khan told the media before the start of the combine that he believes that the Steelers have the talent currently on their roster to make a deep run. The additions that he is planning to make will only increase their chances at competing for a Super Bowl in 2025. If his belief is that they are just a few pieces away, then having a quarterback that has made it to the Super Bowl multiple times and won the Lombardi Trophy makes sense. Unfortunately, Wilson would have to be able to wipe away the memories of the end of last season early on in the 2025 season for fans to approve of him back under center over Fields. Some will call it delusional, but time will tell if they decide to stick with Wilson and give him the correct personnel around him to succeed.
