The Pittsburgh Steelers found themselves mentioned in an interesting trade talk recently. It was around the idea that the Steelers were in discussions with the Miami Dolphins about acquiring veteran tight end Jonnu Smith. Smith, who made the Pro Bowl in the 2024 season, has a strong connection to Pittsburgh’s Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith, having previously played under him in both Tennessee and Atlanta.

However, it appears those trade rumors did not carry much weight. Multiple reports suggest the conversations, if they happened at all, were nothing more than exploratory. The speculation quickly faded and no deal ever materialized. While some fans were intrigued by the idea of pairing Smith with Pat Freiermuth, it seems the Steelers are content with their current tight end group moving forward.

That confidence grew even stronger after a notable update during Organized Team Activities. Third-year tight end Darnell Washington reportedly looked faster, more polished, and more involved in the offense. Coaches have praised his growth and development, signaling that he is ready for a bigger role in 2025. For many fans, that update was more exciting than any trade rumor and solidified the belief that the Steelers did not need to make a move for Smith after all.

The Steelers' offense faces a lot of uncertainty heading into the 2025 season. Pittsburgh is still working to fill out their wide receiver room after trading away George Pickens. On Wednesday, veteran wide receiver Gabe Davis is scheduled to visit the Steelers. He could be an option for the team, but the trade rumors involving Smith now seem to have been more smoke than anything real, despite being reported by respected NFL insiders like Adam Schefter.

Many Steelers fans want to see Washington become more involved in the passing game. Originally drafted as an exceptional blocking tight end, Washington’s 6'7" frame and 264-pound build have fans hopeful that if he sharpens his receiving skills, he could develop into one of the most dominant tight ends in the league. His physical tools certainly give him the potential to be a matchup nightmare for defenses.

However, not all pundits covering the team share the same level of optimism. Some remain skeptical about Washington’s ability to evolve as a reliable receiving threat, leading to conflicting opinions about his role and future impact. This divide highlights the uncertainty surrounding the Steelers’ offensive weapons as they prepare for the upcoming season.

It's interesting to hear quarterback Mason Rudolph speak so highly of Washington. Rudolph was with the Steelers during Washington’s rookie season in 2023 and played a crucial role late in the year. When Pittsburgh needed stability at quarterback the most, Rudolph stepped in and led the team on a three-game winning streak that helped secure an improbable playoff berth, despite the odds being stacked against them.

After signing with the Tennessee Titans in 2024, Rudolph returned to the Steelers for the 2025 season and has been stunned by Washington’s development. Reports that Washington is lighter and faster have caught the attention of fans who are eager to see him take on a larger role in the passing game. His improved agility and speed could make him a more dangerous offensive weapon, especially in the red zone.

There is some concern that shedding weight might impact Washington’s elite blocking ability, which was a key part of his value as a rookie and in his second year. However, it appears that his added quickness and fluidity could actually enhance his overall game. If he can maintain his strength while adding more versatility, Washington could become a true difference-maker for the Steelers' offense. Steeler Nation seems to love this update about Washington.
