The Pittsburgh Steelers had a busy offseason on the defensive side of the football. They will see multiple new faces that will look to get off to a quick start in 2025. Speculation still looms large at safety however, as fans on social media have continued to express their concerns with the depth at the position.

The Steelers acquired superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey in a blockbuster trade earlier in the offseason, with Ramsey potentially seeing time at safety should Pittsburgh opt to not add anymore depth. Ramsey is an elite nine-year veteran and seven-time Pro Bowler that shouldn't have a problem picking up where he left off in Miami. The Steelers could still add safety depth via free agency however, with a promising mix of players remaining available as teams finalize their 53-man rosters.

One name who continues to emerge as a good fit in the Steelers' secondary is Jordan Whitehead. A seven-year veteran who split time between the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Whitehead is a solid veteran who could be an excellent depth piece on Pittsburgh's defensive unit. Whitehead was a star at Pitt on the college level as well and has found himself linked to the Steelers in free agency.
Whitehead has already proven he can succeed in Pittsburgh. A fourth-round pick in 2018, Whitehead has put together a solid career and could prove to be a cheap and reliable option at the Steelers' disposal. The veteran had arguably the best season of his career in 2023 with the Jets and could prove to be a hidden gem should Pittsburgh chose to sign him.

Whitehead is 28 years old and is coming off his second stint with the Buccaneers. The veteran suffered a pectoral injury after starting the first 11 games of the season, ultimately resulting in him missing four games. Whitehead would then return for one game, but was unfortunately involved in an accident which forced him to spend the rest of the season on the non-football injury list.
Steelers Could Make Multiple Moves Following Roster Cutdowns
The Steelers could add depth at multiple positions via free agency with roster cutdowns taking place this week. Whitehead is expected to remain as a top target as the former Pitt star may be an excellent fit in the Steelers' secondary. Pittsburgh has already made a few moves as well, with the team opting to re-sign defensive back Beanie Bishop Jr. to the practice squad earlier on Wednesday.
Bishop signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2024. The former West Virginia Mountaineers DB had a very promising rookie season and could find himself back on the 53-man roster should an injury to another teammate arise. Whitehead could very well remain in the free agent pool as one of the Steelers' possible top targets moving forward, but bringing Bishop back and having him on the practice squad could prove to be important at a later date this season.

Whitehead could find himself on a new team sooner rather than later. The former Panthers star was elite during his time at Pitt, and the veteran is still just two seasons removed from having one of the better years of his career. Fans are encouraged to keep a close eye on the situation as the Steelers could continue making roster moves throughout the course of the week.
