The Pittsburgh Steelers traveled to Dublin, Ireland and managed to grab a 24-21 victory in Week 4 over the Minnesota Vikings. It was exciting for the Steelers to play in there because of the historic culture and lore that exists between the country and the Rooney family. Fans were thrilled to see the team compete on an international stage while celebrating a connection that goes beyond football. The atmosphere in Dublin provided a unique backdrop, making the win feel even more significant for players and supporters alike.

During the game, the Steelers’ defense managed to get to Carson Wentz consistently, taking advantage of a banged-up Vikings offensive line. For much of the game, the defense looked sharper than it had in previous weeks, showing flashes of speed and aggression that fans had been hoping to see. However, some concerns persisted as the defense still gave up a significant number of yards. While they applied pressure and forced some key plays, inconsistency remained an issue, leaving fans to question whether improvements were enough to sustain success moving forward.

Many Steelers fans have been curious and at times confused about whether the defensive struggles are more the fault of Head Coach Mike Tomlin or Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin. Steelers insider Brian Batko provided fans with much-needed clarity on Wednesday in his chat for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Batko broke down the responsibilities of both coaches and analyzed where accountability lies, giving supporters a clearer picture of what went right and what still needs improvement on the defensive side of the ball.

"My understanding of the situation is that Mike Tomlin is heavily involved in every facet, particularly with the defensive philosophy and game-planning and coaching points throughout the week," Batko said on Wednesday. "More so than he is on the offensive side of the ball. But I've never been under the impression that Teryl Austin just stands there with an Eat'n Park menu during the games."

Many Steelers fans have been confused about this or have received conflicting information. In the past, some have expressed the belief that Tomlin has complete control over the defense, while others argue that he allows Austin to call most of the plays. Either way, it is interesting to gain more insight into how the two approach game planning and divide responsibilities.

Fans have also expressed frustration with the results under Austin as defensive coordinator. Despite having a roster full of talent, many feel the defense often underperforms relative to its potential. The perception is that a highly paid and skilled unit has not consistently lived up to expectations under his leadership.

On the other hand, Tomlin is widely regarded as a defensive mastermind, yet he maintains control over the unit. Critics note that even with his oversight, the defense has frequently been out-schemed in recent seasons. This ongoing debate has left fans eager for clarity on where accountability truly lies between Tomlin and Austin.

Steelers' Defense Has To Tighten Up

The Steelers defense had nearly every pundit predicting that it would not just be good, but a real strength for the team in the 2025 season. Through four games, the Steelers sit at 3-1, but that record is not primarily due to the defense.

The unit has struggled and has bent at times, though over the last two games it has produced some momentum-shifting splash plays. The trend is moving in a positive direction, but Tomlin and Austin know the defense still needs to tighten up.
