Steelers Hit With Alarming Update On Acrisure Stadium Field Conditions Ahead Of Matchup With Packers

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ home playing surface has long been the subject of critique. The issue has once again been brought to center stage after former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger mentioned it on his podcast following kicker Chris Boswell’s slip during a field goal attempt in Week 5. That was not the only red flag, as special teams ace Miles Killebrew suffered a season-ending injury that same game, raising even more questions about the safety of the field.

Steelers' kicker Chris Boswell gets his foot caught by the field at Acrisure Stadium during a 23-9 win over the Browns in the 2025 NFL season.

The concerns grew when Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers publicly criticized the turf after the matchup, saying he felt terrible about Killebrew’s injury, and called the field “borderline unplayable” by the third quarter. Pittsburgh Panthers Head Coach Pat Narduzzi even joked that after his team’s game on the surface, he “knew the field was gonna be bad” and probably “should’ve called Coach Tomlin” to warn him.

The Panthers hosted North Carolina State at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday, just one day before the Steelers’ upcoming Sunday night matchup against the Green Bay Packers, and the field reportedly took another beating during that contest. Multiple reporters in attendance shared on their social media just how bad the surface had gotten during the Panthers game on Saturday.

The reports sparked concern among Steelers fans who remember how similar field conditions have affected games in the past. Acrisure Stadium, formerly Heinz Field, has developed a reputation for having one of the worst natural grass surfaces in the NFL, particularly during the fall when Pitt and the Steelers share the field weekly.

Despite repeated maintenance efforts, the combination of heavy usage and unpredictable Pittsburgh weather continues to create major challenges. The Steelers’ home field surface is Kentucky bluegrass, and it is starting to frustrate both opposing teams and the Steelers themselves, who have to play on it consistently.

Steelers' Field Conditions Once Again Sparking Big Time Worry

While there is no official confirmation that the field will be in poor condition for Sunday night’s game, the early signs are hardly encouraging. The Steelers have one of the most physical teams in the league, but even their players cannot thrive if their footing becomes unreliable.

With injuries already piling up and key moments hinging on precision, the condition of the playing surface could easily impact both player safety and game performance. Fans and players alike will be hoping for improvements in the field conditions, but these updates make it hard to feel like that can be possible at this juncture.

Given all the recent chatter, it is clear that Acrisure Stadium’s field is once again under a microscope. From Roethlisberger’s public criticism to Rodgers’ blunt comments and Narduzzi’s jokes, everyone seems to agree that something needs to be done. If Sunday night brings another round of complaints or injuries tied to the playing conditions, pressure will mount on both the Steelers organization and stadium management to finally address what has become a recurring and dangerous issue.
