The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Sunday night game against the Los Angeles Chargers was a nightmare from start to finish. It was a brutal game to watch, even for the most diehard Steelers fans, as Pittsburgh played one of the worst offensive games in recent years. Aaron Rodgers struggled to find a rhythm, the offensive line failed to protect him consistently, and the offense never gained traction. The Steelers lost 25-10 and fell to 5-4 on the 2025 season, leaving fans frustrated and concerned about the team’s ability to compete against strong opponents.

Amid the offensive struggles, 23-year-old return specialist Ke’Shawn Williams made a costly mistake late in the fourth quarter. Down 22-3 with just under seven minutes to go, Williams muffed a punt that would have given the Steelers a chance to regain possession. The Chargers recovered, effectively ending any hope of a comeback. Williams had been returning punts and kicks for Pittsburgh and has shown flashes of explosiveness this season, but this error highlighted the risks and challenges of special teams play.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin addressed the situation when speaking with the media on Tuesday. He delivered a warning to Williams, emphasizing that mistakes on special teams cannot be overlooked and that accountability is critical. Tomlin made it clear that Williams will need to earn back trust and demonstrate he can handle high-pressure situations if he wants to continue in his role. The message from the coach was firm and underscored the importance of every player performing at a high level, even in games that seem out of reach.

"As Calvin [Austin III] came back from injury, we wanted him to focus on getting back up to speed offensively," Tomlin told the media on Tuesday. "Ke had done an above the line job in that space, but certainly we will look at it this week and make plans accordingly giving what transpired in the last game."

As Tomlin pointed out, the Steelers were already dealing with the loss of wide receiver Calvin Austin III due to an injury, and the team wanted to prioritize getting him back into the offense rather than using him as a return man just yet.

With Austin sidelined from special teams duties, Williams had taken on the responsibility of returning punts and kicks. However, after Williams muffed a punt late in Sunday night’s game, Tomlin is now hinting that Williams’ role could be in jeopardy. The mistake was costly, especially in a game where the Steelers were already struggling to mount a comeback, and it has put extra pressure on Williams to prove he can handle high-stakes situations.

Steelers Could Turn Back To Calvin Austin

Looking ahead, it would be interesting to see Austin eventually return to punts and kicks, giving the team a more explosive and reliable option in the return game. Williams is buried on the depth chart at wide receiver and special teams has been where he has made his impact felt.

The error by Williams underscored the importance of every snap in special teams play, especially in tight situations. It put additional strain on a struggling game and highlighted the need for reliability and focus. With Williams' mistake, the team must carefully manage return duties, balancing risk and reward while ensuring younger players like Williams can grow into their roles without critical mistakes.

What grade would you give Ke'Shawn Williams for how he handled return man duties? Let us know in the comments below! Please feel free to share your Steelers takes with me on X @anthonyghalkias and follow me. I will respond!
