The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to have been dead wrong about trading George Pickens away to the Dallas Cowboys. Or maybe they weren’t, that part is open for Steelers fans to interpret. Pickens wasn’t always the most locked-in player during his three electric seasons in the Steel City, but he was always one of the league’s best wide receivers, even if his production did not fully reflect his talent. In his first year with a competent offense, Pickens put up earth-shattering numbers and is now poised to earn top-tier wide receiver money.

Now, Pittsburgh faces the challenge of finding a wide receiver who can complement DK Metcalf and make life easier for new head coach Mike McCarthy. The 2026 NFL Draft will certainly be a place where General Manager Omar Khan and McCarthy will look, but free agency will also play a key role. With both the quarterback situation and the wide receiver room in flux, addressing this position is likely a major priority for the team heading into the offseason.
Here are the free agents currently on the Steelers’ watch list that Steeler Nation fans should keep their eyes on. Each player could make an immediate impact and help fill the void left by Pickens while giving McCarthy the weapons he needs to compete in a stacked AFC North. The coming months will be critical for Pittsburgh as they try to build a roster capable of keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Some key free agent options stand out. Romeo Doubs is an eye-opening choice, in the prime of his career, with a market value of $12 million. Jalen Nailor makes sense because of his youth, production, and market value of $4.7 million. Alec Pierce is expected to command $20 million per year, a lot of money, but his production justifies it.
Another name to watch is Deebo Samuel, who is around the same age as some of the Steelers’ stars, affordable at $15.7 million per year, and would complement Metcalf perfectly with his elite route-running ability. It’s safe to say Steelers fans would breathe a massive sigh of relief if any of these names signed in Pittsburgh, or if another wide receiver capable of being a WR2 joined the team.
The Steelers need to address the wide receiver position. It has been a mess ever since Pickens was traded away and even well before that. They need to not only establish continuity at the position but also figure out what they are going to do with speedy wide receiver Calvin Austin III, who has a market value of roughly $4.8 million. The wide receiver free agent market is rich with options for McCarthy and Khan to find a strong wide receiver two to complement Metcalf.
Steelers’ Mike McCarthy Faces Critical Decision On Roman Wilson's Future
The Steelers also have Roman Wilson, who has still not been able to get on the field after two seasons in Pittsburgh, so McCarthy’s opinion on him will be critical in determining how likely the team is to spend big at wide receiver in free agency. It is clear, however, that Team President Art Rooney II does not believe in rebuild years and will be giving McCarthy the command to go all in during year one and try to compete for a Super Bowl.

Wilson was drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft with high expectations that he could come in as a rookie and produce. An injury derailed him, and he was never really able to get on the moving train.
Then in 2025, many thought he would get more of a chance, but clearly Aaron Rodgers was not his biggest fan, because Wilson, despite playing in a weak wide receiver room, did not get the opportunity. Now McCarthy will try to unlock his potential, or he will face a critical decision on whether he wants to keep Wilson past his rookie deal.
