The Pittsburgh Steelers and the city are loaded with excitement as the 2026 NFL Draft inches closer. On April 23rd, the Steel City will get to host the NFL Draft for the first time ever in league history. However, that is not the only reason fans and the football world are eager to see what happens when the Black and Gold make their pick at 21st overall in Round 1. There is a new era with Mike McCarthy now at the helm, and this will also be Omar Khan’s first draft without Mike Tomlin helping him out. A lot of questions will be answered on draft night.

Another big reason for the anticipation from Steeler Nation comes from the masterclass Khan put on in the 2025 offseason. He loaded this team up with plenty of draft capital. Khan got McCarthy 12 picks to use at his disposal, however they please. With the Steelers’ playoff drought now pushing over a decade, the time is now for this roster to be turned around quickly. As the football world saw with the Seattle Seahawks, a rebuild does not need to take forever. Sometimes having that draft capital and infusing a roster with veteran talent and young playmakers is enough to shock the world.

Steelers fans obviously have what the Seahawks did in the 2025 season in mind, going from a pretender to a Super Bowl winner in a season under new leadership. The Steelers are under new leadership in McCarthy, and that is why everyone is curious how they will use those 12 picks. Well, on Monday, news broke across the NFL landscape from Adam Schefter stating that New York Giants superstar defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade.
"ESPN sources: Giants All-Pro defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade and he will not be participating in the team’s offseason workout program that opens Tuesday," Schefter said. "Lawrence and the Giants have been through two offseasons attempting to negotiate a contract reflecting his value to the Giants over the last three years, but there has not been any progress, per sources."
The very first thing to point out is how this connects to Pittsburgh. First, the Steelers hired a new defensive coordinator when McCarthy came to town, and that is Patrick Graham. He is an exciting hire because he limited big plays during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders and performed well despite not having the financial investment and backing from his front office. In Pittsburgh, his defense is loaded with talent.

Lawrence actually played under Graham during their time in New York together. Graham coached him during the 2020 and 2021 seasons when he was the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Giants.
With so much draft capital at their disposal and the Steelers always being eager to improve their defense, now that Lawrence is technically available via trade, it could give Khan a unique and exciting chance to reconnect Graham with a former first-round pick. The 28-year-old nose tackle is a two-time Second-team All-Pro (2022, 2023) and a three-time Pro Bowler (2022–2024), making him clearly a proven stud.
Steelers' Defensive Line Could Turn Lethal Overnight
Pairing him with a veteran like Cam Heyward, along with young talent like Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black, as well as Sebastian Joseph-Day, is an exciting thought. However, it is one that remains just that for now. Khan will likely test the waters, but Joseph-Day appears to be the current nose tackle solution.

Still, when the unforeseen happens and there is a chance to improve a roster as much as adding a player like Lawrence, Khan will surely be open to exploring the idea.
