The Pittsburgh Steelers’ situation with third-year wide receiver Roman Wilson continues to be one of the more closely watched storylines heading into the 2026 offseason. When the Steelers selected Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the expectation was that he would quickly develop into a reliable contributor in the passing game. Instead, his early career has been slowed by an injury in his rookie year that disrupted his momentum and kept him from establishing any real rhythm within the offense. Even as the Steelers entered a 2025 season in need of consistent wide receiver production, Wilson remained largely on the outside looking in, sparking questions about his development and long-term role with the team.

Much of the speculation around Wilson’s limited involvement has centered on fit and consistency within the offense, especially as the Steelers cycled through quarterback and scheme adjustments. Fans are still placing bets at Lizaro online casino on what might happen. There were even rumblings of frustration in the locker room regarding timing and route execution, though nothing has been officially confirmed by the organization. Still, the result was clear. Despite the team’s need for playmakers alongside a vet like DK Metcalf, Wilson struggled to find meaningful snaps, leaving fans puzzled about why a recent draft investment was not being maximized.
Now under new head coach Mike McCarthy, the Steelers are attempting to reset expectations and evaluate their young talent with a fresh perspective. McCarthy, who inherited Wilson on this roster, has reportedly taken a closer look at both Wilson and fellow 2026 addition Germie Bernard, a second-round pick the Steelers traded up to acquire. Bernard joins an intriguing receiver group, and both young receivers have been rotating through multiple roles in early offseason work, lining up across different positions in an effort to accelerate their development. The hope inside the organization is that versatility will unlock more consistent production. McCarthy spoke to the media on Wednesday to share a powerful update on Wilson and Bernard.
"They're crushing it, frankly," McCarthy said in regards to Wilson and Bernard. "It's best for our receivers to play all three positions to create opportunities for our receivers."
As the Steelers look ahead to a critical 2026 campaign with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the helm, the development of their young wide receivers could be a defining factor in how far the offense can go. McCarthy has recently provided a more optimistic tone regarding Wilson and Bernard, signaling that both players are showing progress in offseason programs. If that translates into real on-field impact, Pittsburgh’s offense could finally gain the youthful depth it has been missing.

As for Bernard, it is good to hear he is crushing it so early in his involvement with his new team. Wilson has been in the NFL for two full seasons even though he has not done much on the field, and he has already had the chance to learn the offseason programs. That is why it is more exciting to hear Bernard is also thriving right away, especially after the Steelers traded up to land him with a premium pick. McCarthy made it clear with that move that he expects Bernard to contribute, so it is no secret he needs to be performing at a high level from the start.
Steelers' WR Room Set To Be Much Better In 2026
Still, it is encouraging to hear this early success, and it says a lot about how involved Bernard may become as the 2026 season approaches. Like Wilson, he will be asked to step into a role early if the Steelers want to maximize their receiving group alongside Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr.

Both Wilson and Bernard will be competing for reps in 2026, but at this point Bernard appears to have the early edge based on how quickly he is adjusting and producing in offseason work. Though Wilson is also crushing it, according to McCarthy. The Steelers wide receiver room is set to be much improved in 2026 now.
