Aaron Rodgers Sends Strong Message About Steelers WR Roman Wilson

As soon as the Pittsburgh Steelers announced they were selecting Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, excitement quickly spread throughout the Steel City. Fans hoped Wilson could step in immediately as a rookie and become a reliable contributor in the offense. Unfortunately for both Wilson and the Steelers, that is not how his rookie season unfolded. In his first year in Pittsburgh, Wilson appeared in just one game and played only four offensive snaps after suffering an early injury during training camp. By the time he was healthy, he was never able to fully get back into the rotation.

Now, with Mike Tomlin no longer leading the team and Wilson entering his third NFL season, there are plenty of questions surrounding his future. The Steelers also added significant competition to the wide receiver room during the 2026 offseason, acquiring Michael Pittman Jr. via trade and selecting Germie Bernard in the draft. Wilson now has more competition for snaps and is playing under a coaching staff that did not draft him. With Wilson still largely unproven, many are beginning to wonder whether his opportunity to establish himself in Pittsburgh is running out.

During the 2025 season, there were rumblings that former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith struggled to find the right way to utilize Wilson’s skill set. There were also questions about whether Aaron Rodgers trusted the young wide receiver enough to consistently put him on the field.

However, after Rodgers spoke with the media on Tuesday, Steeler Nation has started to speculate that Wilson may finally be earning more trust heading into his third season. While Wilson showed flashes during the 2025 campaign, he also made mistakes that kept him off the field, even when Pittsburgh needed additional pass-catching help. That's why the 2026 season is so massive for both the Steelers and Wilson.

"I expect him to start to make some splash plays," Rodgers said. "He did in the spring. I expect him to have a nice camp."

In Wilson’s second season with the Steelers, he appeared in 13 games and finished the year with 12 receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately for Wilson, despite the team needing additional production from the wide receiver position, he never fully proved to the previous coaching staff that he was ready to handle a larger role.

Steelers Have A New Sheriff In Town

Now, there is a new sheriff in town with Mike McCarthy taking over as head coach. On the offensive side, coordinator Brian Angelichio is eager to find ways to maximize Wilson’s skill set and help him become a bigger part of the offense.

Wilson entered the 2026 offseason as a healthy scratch at times, but after spending time on a trip with Rodgers and other pass catchers, along with Rodgers’ latest comments to the media, there is growing belief that Wilson’s outlook could be much brighter heading into the 2026 season.

With training camp now underway, Wilson faces significant pressure to prove he belongs as a starter in Pittsburgh. The competition will be fierce, especially with Bernard and other receivers pushing for opportunities. This could be a pivotal season that determines whether Wilson becomes a long-term piece of the Steelers’ offense or fades into the background.

The Steelers are all-in on one final ride with Rodgers, and while it is encouraging to hear such positive comments surrounding Wilson, those words will only mean so much until the praise from those inside the organization translates into consistent production on the field.

For Wilson, 2026 represents a critical opportunity. The talent and work ethic have always been there, but now he must prove he can turn the confidence from his coaches and teammates into results when it matters most.
