The Pittsburgh Steelers' annual training camp evening practice brought some tough news for the team as it continues to get closer to preseason football. Head Coach Mike McCarthy made the big change of no longer going with live tackling at training camp, which is just one of what could be many changes that fans see compared to the previous regime under former head coach Mike Tomlin. The new staff for the Black and Gold is looking to turn things around entirely, as quarterback Aaron Rodgers is reuniting with his former head coach. However, one big turn around will need to happen on defense.

Joining the new staff in Pittsburgh is defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, following his time with the Las Vegas Raiders. He has his work cut out for him, as the defense in the Steel City looks to turn back the clock and play up to the standard the franchise set decades ago. One thing that will have to work in his favor is the health of his players, and this is especially true for safety DeShon Elliott, who had a great 2024 for the team. However, he saw his 2025 NFL season cut short due to injury and it hurt the unit in a big way.

One area that plagued the defense in 2025 was the secondary, which the front office did a great job of adding reinforcements to with safety Jaquan Brisker and veteran cornerback Jamel Dean. However, team insider Nick Farabaugh reported that cornerback Brandin Echols was seen in a boot following an apparent injury sustained during the practice at camp on Thursday. While this news is unfortunate, it is not clear exactly how severe the injury to the Pittsburgh cornerback may be.

The one focus of the no live tackling in training camp seemed to be cutting down on potential injuries. With an extremely experienced head coach in McCarthy, he has seen training camps with live tackling, but also realizes that he has the technology at his disposal to pave the way for this change to no live tackling. Despite that change made, this news from Farabaugh is not a good sign as the team looks to vastly improve on defense in 2026.

Steelers Have A Crucial Need To Stay Healthy In 2026 Season

The Steelers definitely improved on paper during the 2026 offseason thanks to their proactive and aggressive approach in free agency. However, even Rodgers went down during the 2025 season due to injury, so it is paramount to stay healthy in McCarthy's inaugural year coaching the team. While it is not entirely clear as to what to expect from the new leadership until they hit the field for preseason games, the Echols injury does not bode well for them.

However, this is where the proactive approach to free agency and the offseason can work as a massive benefit in their favor. This injury does hurt their depth to a degree, but having a veteran like Dean at cornerback lessens the blow following this news from Latrobe, PA. The team finished 26th in total defense during the 2025 NFL season, thanks to them allowing 356.9 yards per game. This is not something the Steel City has become accustomed to, especially after the years of the Steel Curtain defense, which played smashmouth defense.

The one thing to keep in perspective with the news of Echols' injury is that there is still about a month to go until the 2026 NFL regular season. His new defensive coordinator also did some great work in Las Vegas, notably with far fewer resources and less talent at his disposal on the field.

However, the versatility of the now-injured Pittsburgh cornerback does lessen the talent at Graham's disposal in his first year coaching the defense in Pittsburgh. More information should be available soon about the injury, but this is not something people want to see after about two weeks since the start of training camp.
