The Pittsburgh Steelers have faced issues with the wide receiver position for many seasons now. The offense as a whole has struggled since the retirement of legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. In the new era of Steelers football, the organization has cycled through many different receivers. In 2026, Pittsburgh has acquired multiple new players in the wide receiver room, hoping for an improved unit. On paper, the receiving corps looks very solid, but there may be trouble below the surface.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers did not have many weapons to work with during the 2025 NFL season. That has since changed, as the Steelers have added two big names to the wide receiver room during the 2026 offseason. Pittsburgh acquired veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts in March. Pittman Jr. has built a very solid career over his six years in the NFL, totaling 485 receptions for 5,254 receiving yards and 25 receiving touchdowns. The Steelers are expecting big things from Pittman Jr. during his first season in the Steel City, as he is viewed as the first true No. 2 wide receiver the team has had in quite some time.
The Steelers also drafted Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Germie Bernard 47th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. Bernard has shown flashes during the preseason and in training camp, providing confidence to the organization that he could become something special.
The issue within the wide receiver group is the inexperience of the players, especially regarding the connection they each have with Rodgers. In a recent episode of The Fan Morning Show, Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo explained how this issue could be a big problem for Pittsburgh in the early portion of the regular season.
I don't know if Rodgers and Pittman Jr. have that connection down yet," Fittipaldo noted. "There [are] some issues in the receiving corps. The amount of practice those guys have missed, the youth, to me that is probably the number one concern for the team going into the season."
Pittman Jr. missed a large portion of training camp due to an injury, which has led to his connection with Rodgers being in question. Neither he nor leading wide receiver DK Metcalf saw any preseason action, which could lead to some rust for the two players heading into Week 1.

As mentioned, Bernard is a rookie and is still taking time to develop. It is hard for a young player to establish all of the traits needed to be ready for a large workload right out of the gate, especially while playing alongside a savvy veteran quarterback like Rodgers.
Another piece to the puzzle is third-year man Roman Wilson. Wilson has had a lot of trouble staying on the field due to injuries, but the team is still counting on him to break out this upcoming season. He has shown flashes and, as of late, has gotten a lot of high praise from Rodgers and newly appointed head coach Mike McCarthy.
Steelers Have Other Options Within The Offense
While the team's wide receivers might take some time to find their footing, the Steelers have a great group of tight ends that could pick up some of the slack. The room is led by veteran Pat Freiermuth, who is entering his sixth NFL season as become a safety blanket for Rodgers.
The Steelers also employ Darnell Washington, who stands at a whopping 6-foot-7, 264 pounds. Washington is one of the best, if not the best, blocking tight ends in the entire NFL. He also serves as a massive target for Rodgers in the red zone, something that Steelers fans are hoping to see more of this upcoming season.
Finally on the depth chart is veteran Robert Tonyan. Tonyan enters his ninth season in the NFL and spent a lot of time with the Green Bay Packers in his early years. He played 68 games with Rodgers as his quarterback in Green Bay, so the duo already has an established connection.
It seems that Pittsburgh has a very solid group of weapons for Rodgers to use in his presumed final NFL season. It will take both sides to be on the same page early in the season if the Steelers want any chance to have an improved offense, something that fans are desperately seeking.
