"It Is Much Better": Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Sends Direct Message To Art Rooney II

The Pittsburgh Steelers' Week 1 victory provided plenty of smiles given their 20-13 triumph over the Atlanta Falcons. As Head Coach Mike McCarthy was filled with emotion in his debut coaching for the Black and Gold, his team made sure to bring him off the field in the proper fashion. One of the big storylines entering the year was how much different things would be following the departure of former head coach Mike Tomlin. Following the game on Sunday, there was one change that was very important, but it was not because of the change in the two head coaches.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers played his first game under McCarthy since their time with the Green Bay Packers. The veteran signa-caller had 24 completions on 40 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown in the tilt. His lone score went to his tight end Pat Freiermuth following an interception from safety Jaquan Brisker. 

After the Week 1 victory, McCarthy met with the media as did the players for their postgame press conferences. Amongst those guys who spoke to was the veteran in Rodgers. During this media scrum, Rodgers made mention of one big difference he noticed today compared to last season, and it was a direct shout at Art Rooney II for getting a new playing surface installed.

“I will say, whoever’s doing the field, bravo,” Rodgers said. “Bravo. It is much better.”

The Steelers do not own Acrisure Stadium, but they are in charge of managing the field in terms of upgrades and maintenance, per the lease. One issue that seemed to be a point of controversy last season was the playing field conditions in the Steel City given that the Pitt Panthers play home games there on a lot of Saturdays. 

The university had a home game Saturday prior to the Black and Gold's season opener on Sunday, but it appears that the crew taking care of the field is doing a much better job of cleaning it up following those games. Not to mention, a different kind of grass was installed.

Rodgers' numbers did not exactly jump off of the stat sheet given what he has done in the past in his NFL career as a four-time league MVP. However, he did go to Freiermuth more than what he was used to doing in the 2025 season, as the tight end had more receptions than DK Metcalf. Despite the numbers not being explosive, the Pittsburgh quarterback found a way to be efficient under what he feels are improved field conditions to start the 2026 season.

The front office had a clear goal in mind by bringing in veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. to help take attention off of Metcalf. This was to give the quarterback more options to distribute the ball to in 2026. Week 1 showed to be a balance attack through the air for the Pittsburgh receiving room. This came despite seeing no receptions for rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard in the contest.

Steelers Could Have Huge Home Field Advantage In 2026

Following the comments by Rodgers, it could prove to be a huge home field advantage in 2026 if the field conditions have improved. He is better equipped with weapons this year which can provide a big boost to the offense that really wants to improve given McCarthy's offensive-minded background. 

With the NFL experience Rodgers has under his belt, clean playing conditions can bring forward an added advantage for the team in home games during their regular season schedule.

The Steelers will now flip the page as they go on the road for Week 2 to take on a heated rival in the New England Patriots to begin the road part of their 2026 season. 

They will return home in Week 3 against their division rival Cincinnati Bengals, and it will be interesting to see if the playing conditions on the field are favorable for the offense as they were in Week 1 against Atlanta. As they look to improve an offense that struggled often in 2025, this improved grass at home can help them transcend the offense which is backed by the home crowd.
