Steelers Face Alarming Defensive Line Problem As Insider Exposes Depth Concerns

The Pittsburgh Steelers have managed to avoid significant injuries along their defensive line through the first three games of the 2026 season, but there may be a much bigger problem developing behind the scenes. Despite being excited about several young defensive linemen, Pittsburgh apparently isn't comfortable trusting all of them with meaningful playing time. That could become a serious issue for head coach Mike McCarthy if the Steelers suffer even one significant injury to their defensive front.

Pittsburgh entered the season with an intriguing combination of established veterans and promising young players. Cameron Heyward continues to anchor the defensive line alongside Keeanu Benton, Derrick Harmon and veteran addition Sebastian Joseph-Day. However, the Steelers also elected to retain rookies Kevin Jobity Jr. and Gabriel Rubio, hoping both could eventually develop into dependable contributors.

Unfortunately, their development may not be progressing quickly enough to address Pittsburgh's immediate depth concerns. Steelers insider Nick Farabaugh discussed the situation during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, revealing why the coaching staff appears reluctant to give its younger defensive linemen additional opportunities. His comments also raised questions about how Pittsburgh would respond if injuries suddenly forced those inexperienced players into significant roles.

"Clearly, the Steelers do not believe these young cats are ready to go in the run game," Farabaugh said. "We talked to Domata Peko two weeks ago, and he straight up said Jobity was just a pass rusher. That's kind of something you should read into there. They don't trust him in run defense."

That assessment is particularly concerning considering the importance of stopping the run in Pittsburgh's defensive scheme. Jobity demonstrated intriguing pass-rushing potential during the preseason, which helped him secure a spot on the Steelers' initial 53-man roster. However, being capable of pressuring opposing quarterbacks doesn't necessarily mean a young defensive lineman is prepared to handle the physical responsibilities of defending the run.

Farabaugh also expressed reservations about Rubio, another rookie Pittsburgh decided to retain despite questions surrounding his readiness. The former Notre Dame defensive lineman showed flashes of potential during training camp, but his preseason performances apparently revealed areas that still require considerable development.

"I think Rubio had some promise, but go back to the preseason tape, and it was a lot more scratchy," Farabaugh said. "There are ups and downs with these young players, but they didn't want to expose them to waivers."

That final observation is especially revealing. Pittsburgh clearly values the long-term potential of Jobity and Rubio enough to keep them on its active roster rather than risk losing either player. However, protecting developmental prospects and trusting them to contribute immediately are two completely different things.

The Steelers have essentially committed two valuable roster spots to young defensive linemen who, according to Farabaugh's assessment, aren't necessarily prepared to handle substantial responsibilities. That approach makes sense when the established contributors remain healthy, but it creates an uncomfortable situation if Pittsburgh suddenly needs additional help.

Steelers' Defensive Line Depth Could Become A Big Problem

The biggest concern surrounding Pittsburgh's defensive line isn't necessarily how the unit is performing right now. It's what could happen if the Steelers lose one of their four established contributors for an extended period. Heyward, Benton, Harmon and Joseph-Day provide a dependable foundation, but relying so heavily on a small group of trusted players carries considerable risk. Of course, there's Yahya Black as well.

Farabaugh also raised the issue of keeping those four defensive linemen healthy throughout an entire season. Pittsburgh cannot reasonably expect its established contributors to handle an excessive workload every week without eventually needing additional support. Defensive linemen regularly absorb significant punishment, particularly when battling double teams and attempting to control the line of scrimmage.

That's precisely why the Steelers should consider themselves fortunate to have avoided significant injuries at the position thus far. Losing Heyward or another important contributor would create an immediate problem if the coaching staff remains uncomfortable trusting Jobity and Rubio against opposing rushing attacks. Even a relatively minor injury could force Pittsburgh to dramatically increase the responsibilities of players who are still developing.
