Many Pittsburgh Steelers fans were dismayed when they realized no significant coaching changes were being made in the offseason. After another loss in the first round of the playoffs, more fans than ever called for firing Head Coach Mike Tomlin. However, the realistic ones knew that wouldn't happen, even if they didn't like it. The Rooney family is known to be loyal to their coaches, some would say to a fault, and Art Rooney II is no exception.

So far, the only significant change has been the decision not to renew the contracts of two bright, young, defensive minds: Aaron Curry and Grady Brown. While fans were surprised by the hiring of Gerald Alexander, who'd been with the Steelers previously, they wanted the team to expand their coaching staff and perhaps hire a consultant as they did with Brian Flores.
The Steelers' smaller staff often gets cited as a sign of Rooney's spendthrift ways, but some media members have pointed out that the tallies aren't done equitably. Some teams, like the Miami Dolphins, have a much bigger coaching staff than the Steelers, but they include everyone from training assistants to nutritionists and such on that list, while Pittsburgh sticks to just a literal coaching staff. That doesn't mean the Steelers don't have growth opportunities.
Recently, on The Fan Morning Show on 93.7 The Fan, Mark Kaboly from The Pat McAfee Show was asked if he thinks the Black and Gold will bring in some offensive consultant this year. One name that has come up frequently is Mike McCarthy, the former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. McCarthy was their head coach for five seasons; before Dallas, he was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons.
"I think Pat McAfee, he wasn't on his show, but I think he might have reached out to him, and he said he's just gonna take the year off," explained Kaboly. "Now, I don't know if that means a year off coaching or if he's willing to come and just help out, sort of like Vrabel did in Cleveland last year. Everything you know from the Steelers, does that seem like something Mike Tomlin would do? I don't think so, either. It's fun to talk about, but you already got Arthur Smith, you've got Mike Sullivan, who was a former offensive coordinator in this league as well and with the Steelers for half a year, and you got Eddie Faulkner, who was part offensive coordinator. How many pseudo-offensive coordinators do you need on one roster?"
Jason Mackey, who was guest-hosting the show, said that from his perspective, it gives McCarthy a chance to showcase his skills. After the Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel, he went to the Cleveland Browns and served as a consultant. While the Browns didn't have a great season, Vrabel secured a new head coaching job with the New England Patriots.

Part of the McCarthy allure is that he is a Greenfield native. He was raised a Steelers fan and led the Packers to victory over his childhood team in Super Bowl XLV. Yinzers love to see locals return home to where they belong.
Steelers Fans Should Still Have Hope
While fans might be frustrated with the season's outcome, they should still have hope for the team's future. One of the reasons for that hope is Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl.
Weidl came to the Steelers from the Philadelphia Eagles, where he helped them design and build teams that hoist Lombardi Trophies. The players Weidl helps select may not be the flashiest or most sexist picks, but they are the most critical. His approach of building from the trenches up helped the Eagles go to three Super Bowls and win two of them since he was hired in 2016.
His fingerprints have been all over Pittsburgh's most recent drafts and the influx of offensive linemen. Now that the Steelers have several solid young offensive linemen, he is expected to turn his attention to the defense in 2025.
