The Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver room has been a major concern ever since General Manager Omar Khan traded away Diontae Johnson ahead of the 2024 NFL season. While the Steelers have full confidence in their star wide receiver, George Pickens, questions remain about the depth behind him. Pickens has consistently produced despite playing in a historically bad offensive scheme with poor quarterback play, proving himself as a true playmaker.

Outside of Pickens, however, the wide receiver group has been underwhelming. Calvin Austin III has been a bright spot, stepping up when needed, but the depth behind him remains a serious issue. This has led to widespread speculation that Pittsburgh will be aggressive in the free agent market to bolster the position. There are a few intriguing options available, and the Steelers now have even more possibilities after recent roster moves across the league.

On Wednesday, two veteran wide receivers became available, potentially giving Pittsburgh the perfect opportunity to address its wide receiver concerns. The Seattle Seahawks released 32-year-old Tyler Lockett, a proven deep threat and reliable target. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars parted ways with 28-year-old Christian Kirk, a dynamic receiver who can thrive both in the slot and on the outside.

If the Steelers are serious about upgrading their wide receiver corps, they now have a golden opportunity to pursue Lockett, Kirk, or even both. With training camp and the 2025 regular season approaching quickly, adding a veteran presence could make a significant impact. Now, the question remains—will Pittsburgh make a move?

Kirk is an intriguing option, having played seven seasons in the NFL and establishing himself as a reliable receiver. Over his career, he has totaled 404 receptions for 5,176 yards and 29 touchdowns. His best season came in 2022 with the Jaguars when he caught 84 passes for 1,108 yards and scored eight touchdowns.

Interestingly, the Steelers reportedly had interest in Kirk during the 2024 season, but any potential move was halted after he suffered a broken collarbone in a game against the Green Bay Packers. Now, Pittsburgh has another opportunity to bring him to the Steel City if they choose.

However, the bigger question is whether the Steelers truly need another slot receiver. They selected Roman Wilson in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, though he was inactive for nearly the entire season. The jury is still out on what role Wilson will play in Pittsburgh, but adding a 28-year-old veteran slot receiver like Kirk could complicate his development. If the Steelers prioritize Wilson’s growth, they may hesitate to bring in another player at his position.

Steelers Adding Tyler Lockett Could Be A Great Move To Help Unlock George Pickens

On the other hand, the idea of bringing in Lockett is just as intriguing. At 32 years old, his future in the NFL remains uncertain, but his potential impact cannot be overlooked. In his prime, Lockett was one of the league’s best deep-ball threats, and his ability to stretch the field would provide a perfect complement to Pickens. Beyond his on-field skills, Lockett is also known for his leadership and professionalism—qualities that could be invaluable for Pickens' continued growth.

It remains unclear whether Lockett wants to continue playing, but if he does, he could be a viable option as Pittsburgh looks to bolster its receiving corps. The Steelers have options, and Khan is expected to be aggressive in improving the roster. Now, Steeler Nation waits to see what moves the team will make as they push to end their playoff drought in the 2025 NFL season.
